Women talk Too Much

Janet Holmes is an academic author who has exposed us to argumentative issue yet controversial. In her own opinion women don’t talk too much but society perceives so. To Janet Holmes, she believes it is just widespread perception that people make that women generally talk too much but in real sense, it is men who talk too much. In her claims, she blames stereotypes that have been generated in societies and she uses some evidence to proof her point and make it home. However, she puts some points clear of the situations that women can be found to talk much than men. In this article, it is not true that women talk too much.

In the first place, Janet claims that, ‘despite the widespread belief that women talk more than man, most of the available evidence suggests just the opposite (Holmes 300).In her evidence to ascertain the opposite of the tidies, she used the 63 studies which were done by two Canadian researchers about the talks made by both made and women. Out of the 63 studies. Women talked much only in 2 studies. It therefore goes against the claim that women talk too much but in real sense, it is men who talk too much. Further evidence is given by Margaret Franken on a TV interview where she claims even though the men and women are a given a third portion of time, men dominate half of the time.

Evidence is given to disapprove the claim. Men talk too much and dominate most of the discussions as supported by evidence conducted in a seminar. In all seminars where the number of men and women are the same, one will find that men will take most of the time of discussion time than men do. It is very imperative to understand that, men in such forums will find time to hold more discussions and will make women lack time to present. When such discussions are converted to meetings, men tend also to chair such meetings making women to feel not part of the meeting.

Another broad evidence to bring on board is on the classroom example. In class, it has been found that boys talk more than girls. Following the scale of schooling from kindergarten to primary, secondary and tertiary, it is very important to understand a fat that, boys are at times taken to be more spirited and fewer disciples. It has been attributed therefore that they tend to dominate the class discussion because of this fact (Holmes 301).Teachers have also supported this fact given that they are the guiders of their progress. When interview of the reason why girls allow their male counterparts to dominate talks in class, one of the girls had the following to say. `Sometimes I feel like saying that I disagree that there other ways of looking at it, but where would that get me? My teacher thinks I am showing off and the boys jeer” (Holmes 303).It brings us to the point that girls don’t have the confidence because of the perception that the boys and the teacher will have about the gilrs. It makes the claim valid that women don’t talk much but men do.

However much the argument giving much credit that women talks much, a point is now clear that it depends also with the context. A study and evidence carried out by American ,British and New Zealand researchers shows that ,the domination of the talk will also depend on the context of the chat. They agreed that men will dominate talks in committee meetings, staff meeting, seminars and task oriented decision making but on the other hand women also have a place. In more private talks which does not involve the enhancement of status, women tend to dominate the talks. Women will talk more on social contexts (Holmes 302) in amid to make personal connections. It is found that women will prefer talks on how to develop personal relationships especially on maintaining family connections. In contrast to men who will want to dominate talks on how to maintain status in public context, Janet Holmes supposes than women will prefer private chats. It is evidenced by an interview which was carried out on men and women who had no influence. Further, when discussions are held and the topic is one the private issue women have expertise they (women) tend to talk more.

Conclusion

It is now evident that men talk more than women and not the vice versa. In both traditional and modern context, men dominate the talk. On more expansive form, men would always want to dominate a talk that would directly translate to their status check and improvement. It is also of importance to ascertain the fact that women live with perceptions and they will lose the social confidence thus making them shy off from talking. However, given the same time in talks, men will use more time to talk in interviews, meetings and seminars. On the other hand, women will appreciate private talks where it does not involve status enhancement. They will prefer to dominate talks on private social issues that will uplift their connections to family and friends.
