Module 3A Laboratory : FM Signals

    Introduction

The purpose of this experiment is to examine the principles of Frequency Modulation

    Procedure

    1. Start Commsim and open the diagram file FM_Modulator.vsm in the Modulators folder.

    Open folder window

    2. Simulate the circuit. You should see results similar to the following:

    Circuit simulation

    3. The information signal is so complex it is hard to see its affect on the carrier frequency. So, double-click the Source block and change the four signal source's to the indicated parameters:

Source block in the Commsim frequency modulation lab experiment

Note that double-clicking a signal source block brings up its parameter dialog.

    Sinusoidal Source Parameters

    4. Resimulate the circuit and note the changes to the carrier signal.

    5. Go inside the Equivalent FM Demodulator and note its diagram complexity. Investigate its sub-blocks.

    Discussion

While reviewing your data and results, provide detailed answers to each of the following:

    1. What is the equation implemented by the Equivalent FM Demodulator?

    2. What change in the information signal causes an increase in the carrier frequency?

    3. What are the delays for in the Equivalent FM Demodulator?
