The Importance Of Play.
Can children learn through playing?
Sensory play.
Sensory play is a healthy way for children to have a chance to exercise some of their senses. Children are able t have sensory play any where like at school or at home. This type of play allows children to also use their fine motor skills. Some activities children can engage in with sensory play are:
Painting with hands (no brush)
Molding with clay using cutters or hands
Tasting fruit (oranges, lemons, apples)
Playing with bubbles
Construction play.
Construction play is a type of play that allows children to be creative while playing. Children are able to think outside of the normal way of doing things and construct things in a way that makes them happy and different. When children build things they are able to count and recite colors. Some activities that challenges a child’s growth/skills are:
Interacting with peers
Building/block arrangement
Matching shapes/colors
Dramatic play.
Dramatic play is a type of play that allows children to imitate certain things they believe to take place. Children are able to take on the role as a teacher, doctor, firefighter, or parent. In dramatic play children can use their imagination any way they see fit mostly from the things the see everyday happening around them. Some activities children can engage in are:
Pretend grocery shopping
Washing dishes
Playing dress up
Preparing dishes (cooking food)
How is play supported my NAEYC?
NAEYC supports children playing because it helps them to develop skills they will need along their journey in life. A child that can interact with other children and try to problem solve on their own is a child who will become powerful. Through positive play children are able to use their imagination and express themselves freely. The NAEYC states “it gives them opportunities to develop physical competence and enjoyment of the outdoors, understand and make sense of their world, interact with others, express and control emotions, develop their symbolic and problem-solving abilities, and practice emerging skills”(NAEYC, 2009).
Summary of teacher collaboration.
No one idea can out weigh another idea. When it comes to teaching children all teachers should want to work together to learn how they can bring out the best in a child. So teachers who can brain storm together and bring their ideas together to work on bring out the best in a child is always a great thing.
