Pro-Gun Control

One of the most talked about issues not only in the political scene, but the economic and social is whether or not the current gun control laws should be replaced or stay as is. Many people are supporting the “Anti- Gun control cause” with their argument being they use it for self defense. I believe that not everyone will handle a gun for self defense. A study showed Guns are the leading cause of 66.6 % of all homicides as well as 52.2 % of all suicides (Procon.org). Having a gun more easily influences a person who may have a problem or some type of issue to resort to using a gun because they see it as a “quick fix” and act on impulse for an easy escape from their problems. In 2010 in the U.S., 19,392 people committed suicide with guns, compared with 11,078 who were killed by others. Legally owned guns are frequently stolen and used by criminals. Between 2005 and 2010, 1.4 million guns were stolen during property crimes (Procon.org). After the guns are stolen there is a high rate of criminals using these stolen guns to commit more crimes or sell them to other criminals. A study by the FBI showed that “The presence of a gun makes a conflict 5 times more likely to become violent”. The FBI found that in 2013 arguments “romantic triangles, brawls fueled by alcohol or drugs, and arguments over money resulted in 1,962 gun deaths” (Everytown.org). This study proves how big of an impact the presence of a gun makes and how dangerous a gun is not only to the owner of the gun but it puts everyone’s lives at stake. A 1993 study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that “rather than provide protection, guns kept in the home are associated with an increase in the risk of homicide by a family member or intimate acquaintance” (Procon.org). Every time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or “legally justifiable shooting, there were 4 unintentional shootings, 7 criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides” (pubmed.com). This evidence provides a look of what a fire arm will do to families’ friends and just ordinary people going about their day. So if gun use is not restricted it will be easier for criminals to get a hold of a fire arm and cause even more damage.
