PROJ595 Risk Paper 1 and 2 Notes, January 2015
Risk Paper 1 (This description supersedes the one in the assignment section)
Risk Paper 1 is due week 3. Write a three- to four-page paper not including the title page or references regarding a project, either real or fictitious, where one is able to discuss how risks were identified and ranked. The student is also welcome to write about a major purchase or major decision in his or her life, such as buying a new car, buying a new home, or even the decision to return to school to earn a degree. All of these are considered projects or procurements that require some form of formal or informal risk review.
Remember to cite and reference any sources that were used in the project or in the decision-making process. At a minimum, students should connect this assignment back to the text and support their decision-making processes with key concepts from the text. One of the elements of this assignment is to connect the material from the course to actual risk decisions. You are also welcome to use any of the checklists from the text to support the decision-making process. See below for the grading rubric.
Additional notes for a successful paper:
Your project and the risks you identify should be significant enough to merit the risk management process. The risks should not just be typical but should actually put the project in jeopardy.
You do need to illustrate the use of your process with actual risks discussed in your project.
You should use a simple risk matrix or register to support the process of identification and ranking.
You do not have to provide detailed technical explanations about the risks or the contingencies. The focus should be on the risk management process and how it would be of value to you on this project. This is a management class not an engineering class.
Your paper should be your own work. There are sources of papers from friends and others that may seem to fit the assignment but will not receive credit even if you reference the source and will be potential plagiarism.
