Some people would argue that Google, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Lincoln Electric, & Wegman’s Groceries are among the “Best Places to Work”, and are also examples of “World Class” (Most Effective) organizations in their various industries. (Some of these companies are on Fortune’s “Best Places to Work” list, but not all of them participate in that survey. http://fortune.com/best-companies/ )
1. Do you agree or disagree that these are “World Class” organizations in their respective industries? WHY?
I agree that the above-listed companies are a great example of world class organizations in their respective industries. Taking Google, for example, over the past years, the organization has invested heavily in the innovations that revolve around technology. This has made Google move from not just a search engine but a great company. Inventing the Android operating systems was one of the major landmark on it a journey of innovations. Today, approximately 81% of the smartphones run on the android operating system. It is due to Google’s effectiveness that it’s able to enjoy such a market share.
Apple, on the other hand, has ensured effectiveness in all the electronic devices that they manufacture. Putting into considerations the user requirements and needs, Apple always comes up with devices that best suit these needs.
Amazon is a leading e-commerce website and throughout the years, it has gained loyalty to an existent of producing their own electronic devices such as the recent Amazon smartphone that are all doing well on the market.
2. What evidence would you cite to support your evaluation? (Be sure to search beyond the Fortune website.)
Below are the key evidence that makes the above companies be best places to work and also the most effective organizations in the world:
Culture- Google, which tops the list of the best working places according to Fortune, has a unique culture. The culture of making each employee is a contributor to an idea during meetings and also removing the boundaries between the junior staff and the CEO. In so doing, innovation is high embraced as the workers are comfortable and have a conducive working environment (Sparks, 2015).
Differentiation- Most of these companies has differentiation strategy that aims at making different products based on the rising needs of consumers. Amazon besides being an e-commerce website, it today has a line of technology electronic devices that it produces. This is an indication of innovation and ability to enhance scalability. People will always want to work in places that promote innovation and have the assurance that the company won’t be shutting down soon (Rosoff, 2015).
3. If somebody had given you 100 shares of each company’s stock when you graduated from High School (WOW!!!! #**@$@#$$$ CA CHING!) would you be happy with the stock’s performance (gain or loss) today. Look up and report what your net gain would have been on each stock. (Note Wegman’s Groceries is not publically traded, so you cannot answer that question for them.)
According to the statics from Nasdaq (Nasdaq, 2015), below could have been my net gain on each stock the most effective companies:
Google - $ 63,000
Netflix- $ 11,500
Amazon- $51,600
Apple- $11,300
Lincoln Electric- $5,800
I will be happier with Google since it gives the highest gain on the stock market. Stock performance is a measure that keeps on changing and as an investor, we prepare for both eventualities. However, the above companies, having invested 100 shares today won’t be a loss. It is also a culture for the top companies to compete, and this means that the chances of me making losses as an investor will be very minimal. The reason being, each company, will put all the measures in place so that it forever remains in the market.
4. How much would you like to work for each of these companies? Use a 1 – 5 scale where 1 = Would dislikethis company & 5 = Would very much like to work for this company.
Google – 5
Netflix- 4
Amazon- 3
Apple- 4
Lincoln Electric- 4
Wegman’s Groceries-3
I would likely prefer working at Google than any other company. The major reason being, at Google, creativity, innovations and teamwork are the key driving values. I would want to work in a place where my contribution is taken into account and through teamwork, I can learn and achieve great towards the company’s objectives and goals.
Unlike Apple that works in secret and geared at surprising the world, Google involves the real users when it comes to perfectioning of its product. I will prefer to work at a place where human-centered design through field testing is carried out. The company also rewards its employees according together with top notch allowances that will motivate me to work extra harder.
