Homework Assignment 1
Due Monday, August 31, 2015
Please use spreadsheet template to complete this problem. Type your answers in the shaded area.
Your boss has asked you to determine the most economical way to replace light bulbs in the chandeliers in the main ballroom. You interviewed the chief engineer and discovered that there are 25 chandeliers each of which contains 20 light bulbs. The engineer informs you that it takes a maintenance worker 25 minutes to assemble and transport all equipment and supplies necessary to change the light bulbs in the main ballroom. Further, it takes 2 minutes to properly position the scissor lift under each chandelier. Once the scissor lift is in place it takes 0.5 minutes to change each bulb. Once the job is complete, it takes 20 minutes to put away all tools and dispose of the bad bulbs. Your department is charged $40.00 per hour for maintenance work (Changing light bulbs counts as maintenance). The current bulbs cost $0.42 each and have a rated life of 5000 hours and they are on an average 20 hours a day, 365 days a year. Bulbs are replaced first thing every morning. Currently the hotel is using the spot method of replacement and on average two bulbs are replaced every morning. The bulbs are typically on different chandeliers. The Group replacement will be done the first thing in the morning, before any bulbs burned out that day. The bulbs will burnout according to the schedule on the template. For group with spot assume that only one bulb is replaced at a time.
One of your suppliers has a new LED bulb which costs $9.99 each and has a rated life of 25,000 hours. If spot is used for these bulbs the engineer estimates that based on their rated life, only one bulb will need to be replaced every 2.5 days.
Part 1
Complete the table then graph the three options for each of the two bulbs then answer the following questions. (You should have 2 graphs with 3 lines on each.) You must save the graphs as separate sheets and use "X-Y Scatter" for the chart type.
Answer the following questions assuming that your boss does not want to see any burned out bulbs in the chandeliers (group is not an option).
Which bulb should you install?
If group with spot is the most economical method, what is the most economical replacement cycle?
If you are currently using the incandescent bulbs and are replacing them based on the spot method, how much will you save annually if you change to the most economical bulb and method?
Part 2
What is the cost per day for energy used by the $0.42 bulb?
What is the cost per day for energy used by the $9.99 bulb?
Complete the table then graph the two options for each of the two bulbs including the energy costs then answer the following questions.
