CIS 175 – Introduction to Networking |
(Prerequisite: CIS 106 or CIS 109 or CIS 111)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of networking technology. The focus of the course will include networking protocols, topologies, hardware and operating systems. Topics include data communications, telecommunications, infrastructure security, inter/intranetworking and the application of networking to multimedia, information storage and distribution.
ADDITIONAL COURSE OBJECTIVE
In addition to academic credit, this course is designed to prepare students to take the CompTIA Network+ certification exam. The specific criteria to take this examination may include prerequisite exams or time in the profession. Students intending to take the CompTIA Network+ examination should review the published requirements by CompTIA to verify that they meet the qualifications. Preparing to pass the CompTIA Network+ certification exam may also require optional exam practice that does not count toward students’ course grade. Successfully completing this course does not guarantee a student will pass the certification exam.

1. Explain the basic components and media of network systems and distinguish between LANs, MANs, and WANs.
2. Describe and differentiate the different layers of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model.

WEEKLY COURSE SCHEDULE
The standard requirement for a 4.5 credit hour course is for students to spend 13.5 hours in weekly work. This includes preparation, activities, and evaluation regardless of delivery mode.

The objective of the School of Information Systems’ writing assignments is to promote attitudes and skills that will improve a student’s ability to communicate in writing, develop research skills and documentation techniques, and encourage critical analysis of data and conclusions specific to the course learning outcomes in the information systems and technology domain.

· One (1) pre-assessment and one (1) post-assessment are part of the required assessments for this course. These assessments use the material covered within the course in order to evaluate your exam readiness. · Quizzes are required most weeks in order to facilitate certification exam readiness. The uCertify quizzes allow for unlimited attempts. · Twenty (10) lab assignments are part of the required assessments for this course. · Practice tests are optional and ungraded assessments that are encouraged throughout this course in preparation for certification readiness. Practice tests are encouraged in Week 11 and are comprised of three (3) individual tests (Practice test A, B, and C) which are each preset with 100 questions and a timed maximum of 120 minutes. The practice tests allow for unlimited attempts and display the correct answers at the completion of each test for self-evaluation.
