BUAD 3000 Career Development II

Discovery Project Part 1, Sections 1 through 3: Company/Organization Selection and Location, Job Vacancy, and Desired/Required Skills and Keywords

33 points

Late assignments are not accepted

My major is management and business

Introduction The Discovery Project will aid in identifying essential criteria you must consider as you pursue any organization. To outpace your competition, you will need to create a connection between the employer’s brand and your personal brand. In the four-step Personal Branding Process (Discover, Create, Communicate, Maintain), this jump-starts the Discovery stage. You will spend time finding key information and career opportunities on your selected organization that will be used in composing your resume, cover letter, personal brand pitch, online applications, and interview responses.

In Part 1, you will identify a company/organization, (hereafter referred to as “company”), and its location, for whom you would like to work and a “real” posted job vacancy. You will also pinpoint and highlight at least five required/desired skills or qualities the employer seeks that you have.

Section 1 Company Name/Location 5 points

Section 2 Job Vacancy Identification and Subsequent Text Acquisition 15 points

Although we will be discussing job search methods throughout the course, to start you may need to do some of the leg work on your own to identify a company with a posted position. If you need assistance, visit with me during office hours the first week of classes. Please note that the company you select will be the company you continue to use for the remainder of the course.

Locate a “real” job vacancy for which you are qualified now with a company of interest using the suggested resources. Remember, you will use this company and the associated vacancy throughout the course! The job vacancy you select must have at least five required/desired skills you will use to brand yourself in all of your upcoming assignments. If the vacancy does not have at least five skills, look for another that does. Once you have identified the position vacancy, copy and paste the text into a new Microsoft Word document or a PDF, save it, and then, print and highlight five (5) copies of it, per the instructions found on page 2, as you will submit it with future assignments, either electronically or in hard copy. Your first in-class assignment submission, entitled “Job Vacancy,” requires that you bring five (5) printed, keyword highlighted copies to class. Failure to produce the job vacancy text/copy will result in a loss of 15 points for each assignment where it is requested.

Use the following resources to identify a posted job vacancy.

Section 3 Desired/Required Skills

Now you must identify the desired or required skills and qualifications necessary to be considered by your selected employer. Whether you seek internships/full-time positions through Business Career Programs, in the newspaper, at job fairs, in networking environments, on internet job boards, LinkedIn, or company websites, it is commonplace today, more than ever, for employers to ask candidates to apply for their available positions online. Thus, making sure keywords, industry verbiage and buzzwords are included in your resume and job search correspondence is critical. If an employer’s “applicant tracking system” does not recognize these desired words once you upload your document, your credentials will not be discovered or considered.

1. List at least five of the desired/required qualities/keywords the employer seeks that you believe you possess and can include in resume statements. These will be one or a few words, not entire sentences. Return to the job vacancy now, and highlight the five skills. (See the sample submission that begins at the bottom of this page). Now, list your five skills. 10 points (5 each for highlighting and listing)
