PHI 100: Introduction to Philosophy

Module 8 Homework Assignment

NOTE: Key Graded Assignments (KGAs) are signature assignments selected from specific courses within a student’s major. The KGAs have been identified as assignments that will ensure a student’s mastery of learning a specific core competency or area of knowledge. KGAs are identified within the course to ensure that students are aware of the importance of these assignments in meeting overall institutional and program learning outcomes. This assignment is a Key Graded Assignment and meets the following program learning outcome: Demonstrate the ability to solve global problems using analytical, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.

Directions: Protest movements are divisive issues; many see protests as a response to an unethical government, whereas others see them as unethical in themselves, as they often result in breaking the law. For this assignment, you will provide three criteria that a protest movement must fulfill in order to be considered ethical. You will then evaluate a recent protest movement in light of your analysis in order to show whether this movement can be considered ethical or not. Finally, examining that same movement, you will explain what specific perceived injustice is being protested against and what general idea of justice this most reflects.

Structure: You will begin this assignment with an introduction paragraph that introduces the topic to your reader. This paragraph should include a thesis that details what criteria you plan to defend and what movement you plan to evaluate in light of this criteria. This section should be at least 100 words in length.

Next, you will provide three criteria that you believe must be fulfilled in order for a protest movement to be considered ethical. In other words, what sort of guidelines do you think a protest must follow in order to be an ethical movement? Why do you think these guidelines are important for an ethical protest movement? This section must be at least 150 words in length.

After you have presented your three guidelines, you will evaluate a recent protest movement in light of these criteria. First, you will explain the movement itself. Then, you will explain whether this movement has met the criteria that you have established as necessary for it to be considered an ethical protest movement. If it has met these criteria, how has it done so? If it has not, what problems have come from this movement’s failure to do so? This section needs to be at least 150 words in length.

Finally, you will explain what perceived injustice this movement is responding to. What general view of justice from this week’s reading does this most align with and why? This section needs to be at least 100 words in length.

Tips: The following are important things to keep in mind while completing this assignment.

· Do not discuss religion. In an argumentative essay of this nature, your goal is to convince your reader to adopt a certain view point. When you discuss religion, you automatically exclude those readers who are either not religious or do not share your particular religious views, leaving you convincing only those readers who already agree with you. Instead, you need to use logical analysis and factual data to support your points.

· Start early and revise often. Even just one proofread can catch many unwanted errors in your final draft which could make you lose points.

· Use all resources available to you. The LIRN Library and Academic Resource Center are two great places to start your research and to get help/feedback on your essay.

Minimum Requirements: Your assignment must:

· Be in APA format with a proper and complete title page

· Have at least 550 words following the format given above

· Be free of grammar, typo, and spelling errors

· List all secondary sources in a reference page using APA format

· Please visit the Academic Resource Center (ARC) for concise APA format and citation guidelines.

· Not use any more than 20% quoted material at most. This means that at least 80% of your discussion needs to be in your own words.
