MINE 1100 – Introduction to the Minerals Industry
Module 8 Assignment – Teck - Environmental Case Studies
Background
Teck is one of the world’s largest diversified mining companies and is based in BC. With many historical and active mining operations, the company has a long track record of environmental management.
To the mining industry, sustainability encompasses a wide range of activities built on the premise that mining products are essentially to our well being and that mining must provide for us today without compromising the ability of future generations to also provide for themselves.
The three pillars of sustainability are:
· Environmental protection (air, water, plants, animals, health)
· Economic growth (benefits to local and national communities, development of long-term economic capacity, jobs)
· Social equity (open communication, education, respect, accommodation, improvement in social capacity)
Instructions
1) Review modules 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5 to refresh your memory about the mining environment, sustainability, and the social license to operate.
2) Download and skim over the report entitled “Resourceful: Teck 2013 Sustainability Report”. There is no need to read the entire report. You can find this report under Assignments/Assignment 8 in the course website. The report provides details on Teck’s sustainability work and includes a series of sustainability case studies (listed on page 3).
3) From this report, chose TWO examples of where Teck has applied the principles of sustainability at or around its mining operations. Your summary for each example should be 2 to 3 paragraphs in length and it should indicate what pillar(s) of sustainability has been applied in the example.
