Re-organization and Layoff Team Discussion & Summary

For our discussion the team used the article titled “Mismanaged Layoffs Can Go Horribly Wrong”. To begin Mr. Marvin made the point in the discussion that we all agreed with about how layoffs should be handled with care so to speak. This is a pretty big issue since most people in the business world lack the grace and empathy necessary to help with the layoff process. I believe that’s why we made it a focal point of our discussion.

Ms. Alloggio made a point in discussing that managers should be trained in how to perform layoffs properly, as well as on what reactions you might get and how to handle them. I agreed with her on that aspect, and added what I knew from my own experience as a manger, and having to perform that task that the best way to handle that situation is like a break up. I say it is like a break up, because you must consider what you say carefully, and make you more empathetic to the employees so that you can comfort them if necessary through the layoff process.

Another good point that Mr. Marvin mentioned was the fact that not handling the situation properly could affect the remaining employees negatively. I definitely agree with that, since it directly affect their image of the manager, as well as the company in their eyes. Handling the situation with respect, and being truthful and informative can make the employees feel less degraded by the situation. This will also show your concern and professionalism to the remaining employees, and not stifle their productivity. Laying people off is the worst part of the manager’s job, but if it must be done one must be sure to handle the situation with the proper behavior. It could easily be them receiving the same treatment one day
