Sony Corp. vs. Universal City Studios

Sony Corp. vs. Universal City Studios

Sony Corp. made tapes called Betamax video tapes that can record home movies and television shows in the 1970’s.

People used these tapes for personal use to record complete television programs. Universal City Studios claimed this was an infringement of copyright laws.

Universal City Studios took Sony Corp. to court claiming they made Betamax video tapes that infringed on copyrights of the television shows.

In 1984, the Supreme Court ruled that making individual copies of television shows for personal viewing does not constitute infringement.

Fair use is what it is considered, not infringement.
