FINAL PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT
PURPOSE:
The portfolio serves as a collection point for the major written materials you prepared for this class.
These materials are effective demonstrations of the kinds of business communication you are now
ready to prepare for an employer.
FORMAT:
You will revise all of the materials you have prepared to date so that they are all error free. You will
also need to prepare some new documents for the portfolio. You should then present this
information in the most professional manner. Neatness is important.
This material is a representation of you. Think about the business communication strategies that you
have learned this semester. Focus on your purpose and your specific audience.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO
COVER PAGE/TITLE PAGE
Prepare a cover page including your name and the course title. Be creative, but professional.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Design a table of contents that clearly shows the layout and contents of your portfolio.
INTRODUCTORY LETTER
This is a letter to explain for your portfolio. Address your letter to “Dear Prospective Employer.”
This letter should be written as if it were describing your work in the course to a prospective
employer, not your instructor. Provide enough information in your letter so that your portfolio
can stand alone, without further explanation. No address needed in the header, do use the
date.
“WHO AM I?” MEMO
Make sure the copy you include is free of any errors and is printed on résumé quality paper.
Also include your edited version behind your final copy.
COVER LETTER
You should include prior versions with corrections behind your final, clean copy printed on
résumé quality paper.
RÉSUMÉ AND REFERENCES
Make sure your final copy is printed on résumé quality paper and completely free of errors.
You should include the edited copies of prior versions of your résumé with corrections. Place
them behind your final résumé. This helps me be consistent with the feedback you are
receiving. References should be included as a separate page with your résumé.
LEARNING REFLECTION
Create a brief one-two page memo where you discuss your learning in this class. What skills
and knowledge from the course will you use in the future? In what ways have your grown as a
writer this semester? How will you continue to strengthen and build your writing and
communication skills moving forward? (This is a new item you will need to create).
ADVICE MEMO
Create a one-two page memo where you discuss your time while at UMKC. I want you to write
as if you are giving advice to incoming students. What do these students need to know to be
successful? Be creative.
