SOCI 3340 SUMMER 2015
GROUP ASSIGNMENT
SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND GLOBALIZATION
Presentation Date: July_______, /August _______2015
(randomly drawn)
Presentation Topic Must be Approved By: July 6, 2015
Chose a social movement from anywhere in the world which still exists today and which has existed long enough so that it has been covered in the academic literature. There is a wide range of movements you may choose from – including armed movements, movements which have won political power and currently exist as political parties, etc. However, you may not choose an NGO (non-governmental organization), or focus on a single campaign.
Prepare a presentation (up to 25 min) that consists of:
Overview of the origins and evolution of the movement up to the present with regards to its: underlying values / philosophy; objectives; organization / structure; support base (members); strategies; achievements; challenges it faces; and relationship with the state and the rest of society. Some of the questions to consider here are: Who are the movement’s members? Who are the movement’s supporters? Who are the movement’s enemies? What does the movement aim to achieve? What have they achieved?
Analysis of how do the causes for the formation of the movement, the movement’s goals, strategies, achievements, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, limitations and/or challenges it faces, can be explained by what you have learned from this course – in particular, the relational approach (ex. structure-agency), Marxist political economy, and concepts such as: neoliberalism (free trade, austerity, privatization, deregulation), globalization, colonialism, and the use of law, ideology, and armed force.
Elements of the presentation:
The presentation should include a visual component (power-point), media (ex. Video clip, images, music), a physical object (that has a symbolic meaning), and oral (presentation by group members).
Your work will be evaluated with regards to:
Coverage, organization, and clarity
Original insights and critical analysis of the movement; appropriate use of the knowledge gained in this course so far; application of the relational approach to assess the strengths and weaknesses;
Creativity and style of presentation – use of a variety of strategies, visual aids, collaboration between group members
The use of at least one academic source (refereed journal article, chapter in a book or an entire book), as well as media sources and any materials produced by the movement itself.
Your presentation will be followed by a 15 min period for Q&A. Please submit a summary of the key points that you will be presenting in writing to Jasmin on the day of the presentation.
Please note that your full collaboration, dedication and respect for your group members is expected. If you fail to collaborate with group members in the preparation of the group presentations, (i.e. you fail to respond or show up at meetings more than twice) you will be removed from the group and will be given a heavier alternate assignment on a short notice.
