Study title

Teach back and pictorial image strategies on knowledge of diabetes and medication/dietary adherence among low health literate patients with type 2 diabetes

Inpatient Diabetes Education Performed by Staff Nurses Decreases Readmission Rates.

Research Questions

Will Pictorial Image and Teach back educational strategies have an impact on knowledge and adherence to medication and diet among patients with Diabetes Type II and low health literacy?

Does bedside diabetes education provided by staff nurses have an effect on readmission rates of patients requiring insulin?

Design

Randomized Control Trial

Non Randomized Retrospective Study (Retrospective Chart Review)

Setting/Sample

127 participants in a secondary care level diabetes clinic in Saqqez, Kurdistan

254 hyperglycemic (>180 mg/dl) acute care patients at Harborview Medical Center

Methods: intervention/instruments

· Teach back method

· Pictorial image method

· Usual care (Control group)

· TOFHLA Instrument

· Morisky Medication Adherence Scale

· Self-Structured Questionnaires

· EMR Review

· Staff Nurse Documentation of “Diabetes Topics Taught (DTT) and topics related to diabetes

· Readmission Rates

Analysis

· Chi-square and independent sample t-test

· Paired T-Test

· Fisher’s exact test

· Analysis of Variance

· Tukey HSD Test

· Pearson Chi Square and T-Test

Key findings

Teach back and pictorial image educational strategies have significant statistical difference in increasing knowledge and improving diet and medication adherence

Inpatient diabetes teaching by staff nurses significantly reduces 7-day, 14-day, and 30-day readmission rates

Recommendations

Utilizing a tailor-made educational approach on diabetic patients with low health literacy has the potential to promote dietary and medication adherence and knowledge

Education provided by bedside staff nurses shows potential to influence reduction of readmissions

How this supports EBP/Capstone

Teachback is proven effective in increasing the knowledge and adherence of patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Reducing readmission rates using the most effective teaching method will decrease readmission rates on patients with diabetes
