(developing thinking in algebra)
Cut-off date: 25 June 2015.
This assignment is based on Chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the core text, which includes ideas met in Blocks 1 and 2.
In this assignment you should include samples of your work, as supporting evidence (in an appendix), which you need to annotate to indicate your thinking and the links to ME625 module ideas. The supporting evidence should not be in the main body of the TMA. Specify the age and mathematical attainment of your learners.
The bookmark is a summary of ME625 module ideas. ME625 bookmark
Question 1
Maximum 1000 words – 50 marks
This question is about you as a learner.
Explain your own work on a total of two of the mathematics tasks in Chapters 5, 6, 7 or 8 (using no more than one task from any one chapter). Make sure that you have varied or extended the tasks to challenge yourself. (Full marks can be obtained even if you get stuck on some of the mathematics and show insightful reflection in your response to being challenged and getting stuck.)
You need to include the following for each task.
· a.An account of what you did, how you did it and why you did it that way.10 marks
· b.An explanation of how you used generalising and another module idea when working on the tasks. 20 marks
· c.Your personal reflection on your role as a learner which could include your use of ICT. You must make use of the ME625 module ideas you have met in Blocks 1 and 2 (and Chapters 13–15 as appropriate). 20 marks
Question 2
Maximum 1000 words – 50 marks
This question is about you as a teacher. It is a planning question and you do not use the task with your learner(s).
Select a page concerning algebra or algebraic thinking from classroom (or online) materials that you could use with your learner(s). The page should contain exercises or tasks for your learner(s) to carry out. Attach a copy of the page in your supporting evidence, annotated with your thinking, and answer the following questions.
· a.In what ways does the existing page offer learners opportunities to specialise and generalise? 15 marks
· b.Design and make an alternative to the page you have chosen (which could include the use of ICT) to cover the same content, using generalising and at least one other ME625 module idea. Explain how your alternative page will enhance a learner’s understanding of generality. Put a copy of your alternative page in your supporting evidence. 35 marks
