A system created to help seems to cause lots of damage to the ones in need of help. Children are in foster care independent of their doing. Everyone are in needs of love from people who care and not being raise in an atmosphere where the love the selfless love can be felt can be devastating in anyone’s life. Does being stated-raised beneficial or cause more mentally challenge criminal in our society? Even if becoming state raise has some benefits, the negative impact outweighs them all. People who grow up from boyhood to manhood in penal institutions lack the nurturing and affectionate side of being human. They never see people who care about them, so they do not know how to care about others because human learns by example. After reading this statement of Jack Abbott "the only time people appear human is when you have a knife at their throats. The instant you remove it, they fall back into animality". It is a known fact that children do not develop advanced reasoning skills until a certain age, and therefore do not fully understand the consequences of their actions. Children are very much a product of their environment. If they live in an environment filled with crime and violence, they are likely to participate in these types of behaviors as well. I do believe that juveniles need to be punished for their crimes, but I'm not sure if incarceration is the appropriate form of punishment. When I think of the term "state raised," I think of an individual who has spent more of their life incarcerated than with the rest of society. Even once no longer incarcerated, these individuals will likely feel like an outsider to the rest of society. It may be hard to find a job due to their criminal record. For some, it is too hard of an adjustment and they will convert back to their "old ways" and likely end back up in prison. ________________________________________________________________ 3- Calli Annon Forum #8 Collapse Juvenile incarceration is a tough thing to deal with because it’s punishing young kids for already possessing qualities of a troubled child that can turn into a troubled adulthood. Abbott refers to a “broken home” as the state would refer it to as being part of the issue of a troubled child. I feel as if an appropriate punishment would be to have them do the time they deserve. Also there is a show on TV called “scared straight” that takes juveniles and they take them into jails and have the prisoners talk to them and scare them about being in jail. I really feel as if this is a good program because they get to talk to adults that were in their situations and want them to correct their lives before they end up in jail as well. I feel as if this message really gets across to young adults about staying out of trouble. ________________________________________________________________ 4- Jessica Bunch Juvy Collapse It is not a surprise to me that children who spend time in a juvenile prison end up spending most of their life in state. These people were raised in juvenile and did not have any parenting or nurturing happening to them. They were punished for any mistakes they made and were constantly surrounded by negativity. When these children are released to go out into the real world they are rough around the edges and don’t fit in. They are used to the harsh everyday environment in juvenile. Just like Newton said in the book Shakespeare Saved My Life, he was thrown in a closet with no windows for hours and was only let out to use the restroom and drink water. These children are used to surviving. Now, out in the world it’s a different kind of survival. I almost think that these children feel more comfortable in juvenile. Maybe that is where their closet companions are that helped them get through every day. Maybe that is why they end up always going back to incarceration.
