Final Reflection

AH 72 American Art History, Prof. Carolyn Stuart ([email protected])

Written homework:

Final Reflection: Please write a short reflection of approximately 300-500 words long. You will be graded on the thoughtfulness of your ideas and how clearly they are expressed. Turn your refelction into eCompanion as a pdf file.

Your initial reflection asked you to write about what you wanted to get out of this course and to set some goals. Review your first reflection before you answer the questions below in paragraph form. Check the list against what you’ve written before you turn in your assignment because you need to answer each question.

1. What did you find most interesting in this course?

What I found interesting is how Americans created their own style of art after giving their backs to the European Art even though a lot of artists like Charles Peale went to Europe to study in Galleries.

2. What did you learn from this course and how does that compare to what you hoped to learn?

We went through the History of the American Art form the Native American cultures until the 1940s and 50s. Learning different kinds of art: paintings, photography, Architecture and murals.in paintings we looked at the landscape, portraits, Genre and modern art. I learned some styles of the American art like the modernism, Regionalism, Ashcan school style, and the 14th century street school. I think I learned most of the things hoped to learn which were: to be able to analyze an artwork and which style and kind it is.

3. Read your answer above. How does this answer compare to what you think you will remember 5 years from now?

I think I will forget some artists names and some artworks but I will defiantly remember the important artists like John Copley, Trumbell, Power , Peale, Winslow Homer and Henri because these artist affected and changes somehow the history of the American art. I will also remember the styles and artworks that I liked and considered important.

4. What would you do differently if you were to take this class again?

I would’ve taken this class after maybe two semesters at college because I faced some difficulties understanding some lectures but I chose not to drop the class because I really liked it.

5. What assignment or readings did you enjoy the most? Why?

I liked the two LACMA assignments because I got to see the artworks in my own eye and how it is different from seeing them in picture. Also, it showed me how it feels to be in an American art museum and encouraged me to visit more museums in the future.

6. What assignment or readings did you dislike, and why?

I disliked the paper assignment. It was difficult to analyze the author’s opinion because the reading was too long and there were details that were important to argue about but I missed them.

7. What do you still want to know about American Art that wasn’t covered or discussed?

I wish that we took more lectures about Architecture because it is my major and I enjoyed the lecture that we took about the building in New York.
