You have just isolated a new cell and you wish to classify it. Assume that you are able to see the inside of your cell with the lab Microscope.
1) How would you determine if your cell is either eukaryotic or prokaryotic? What are the similarities/differences of eukaryotic/prokaryotic cells?
Student one:
Cellular respiration and photosynthesis have a few differences, and also some similarities. They are both reactions that complement each other, they do pretty much the same thing but in reverse. In photosynthesis carbon dioxide is absorbed and oxygen is released, but in cellular respiration oxygen is absorbed and carbon dioxide is released. These two work well together, since all living things need oxygen for respiration living things supply plants with carbon dioxide. Which will need photosynthesis to produce glucose, which then will make the plants and bacteria give out oxygen. One of the differneces between the two, will be that cellualar respiration occurs in living organisms and photosynthesis occurs in plants, algae and some bacteria. Cellualar respiration releases energy, and photosynthesis requires energy to even work properly.
Student two:
I’ve just isolated a new cell that is either eukaryotic or prokaryotic. I can tell the difference depending on whether or not I see a loosely floating organism that is absent a nucleus. An organism with a nucleus is considered a eukaryotic while a prokaryotic lacks one.
My cell has been discovered as being eukaryotic. What’s left to understand now is whether or not it belongs to an animal or a plant. Using my handy-dandy microscope I delve deeper into the cell to understand whether or not it includes a cell wall and the specific shape it takes on. The purpose is so that I can differentiate between an animal cell and a plant cell. The plant cell has a cell wall and is of a fixed rectangular shape while the animal cell will be irregular or round in shape and absent a cell wall. There are other minor differences but the one’s I mentioned would be the most significant in order to tell the difference between an animal and plant eukaryotic cell.
