DECISIONTECH COMPANY
It is common for people to be different from others in terms of personality, ideologies, leadership qualities and even their view on certain aspects. The same can be said of Nick and Mikey, the two vice presidents in DecisionTech Company. From the onset, Mikey comes out, as being arrogant and a bit disrespectful to his colleagues and this not give teamwork a damn. Nick on the other hand is more cooperative and a firm believer of the fact there is need for teamwork if the company is to achieve its collective goals.
NICK
Being one of the vice-presidents of the company but famously carrying the title Chief Operations Officer (COO), the following can be said of Nick:
Politics
From his own acknowledgement during the Napa off-set meeting, Nick indeed agrees that there is politics in the organization but is quick to note that this politicking is indeed average and that it is kind of necessary given the fact that the company is operating in a tough market.
Views on international competition
Nick is a person who believes that departments or units within an organization should not compete against each other but rather work towards similar goals or objectives. As such, each function should involve all the other functions or consider their input in whatever it does .This means no department should fight for more resources at the expense of the others but look at the overall picture for the entire company.
World view
Nick seems to leave no doubt that he agrees with new CEO’s assertion that Decision Technique is doing well in terms of revenue,Technology and even the quality of the Board and executive members compared with its competitors but the problem is the dysfunctional team.
Single loop learning
He is ready to accept that there is problems in the way things are being run in the company and that actually they have not been working as a team. He is in agreement with Kathryn’s model of dysfunctional team.
Dysfunctions of a team
(i) Lack of trust-Nick believes that the fact that previously debates were not lively does not necessarily mean lack of trust.
(ii) Fear of conflict-Nick agrees that at times they have to reserves their comments to avoid pissing off each other.
(iii) Lack of commitment-He agrees to the fact things were not being done as a collective unit thus no uniformity in terms of goals for the organization
(iv) Avoidance of Accountability-According to Nick, the executives consider each other as equals and as such it is difficult to hold each into account.
(v) Inattention to results-Each Executive worked towards ensuring his department was doing well to suit their status and ego.
MIKEY
The fact that she was the second casuality of Kathryn’s reign is a clear indicator that she was not a team player and was not ready to change her attitude towards the need to work as a team. She comes out as lacking some ‘’social graces’’
Politics
She acknowledges the fact that there is a lot of politicking in DecisionTech company but she does not find anything absolutely wrong with it.According to her, that is how things should be.
View on internal competition
Mikey is adamant that each unit or department within the company should fight to ensure it is doing well and even get more resources. To her, working as a team is not important so long as her department was doing well.More so,she does not see the need to involve other functions within the company as evidenced by the fact that she said she will conduct the sales Training alone and the fact that she developed the product bronchure without taking the input of other departments.Perhaps that is the biggest reason why she had to leave the company .It was clear she could not fit into the team.
World view
Mikey always believed that other companies were doing things differently and better than DecisionTech Company. As a matter of fact she was opposed to the Napa off-set meeting because to her that was waste of time and that it was something other companies would not contemplate doing.
Single learning loop
She does not believe there is problems in the way things are happening in the company and thus no need change attitudes as put forward by Kathryn.
Dysfunctional of a team
(i) Lack of trust according to her there is nothing lack of trust in the company, there Is just nothing worth discussing in the meetings and that is why the debates have been boring and passive.
(ii) Fear of conflict-Mikey also does not agree with this analogy because she is of the opinion that any conflict is actually counter productive.
(iii) Lack of commitment-she believes each department should focus on doing its part and therefore working towards one goal as a company is not important so long her function is doing well
(iv) Avoidance of accountability-she is totally against holding each other accountable as that is tantamount to minding about other people’s business.
(v) Inattention to results-she does not bother about team results so long as she is doing well on her side.
