Homework Assignment 4
1. The file “NewDrug2” on moodle contains data from a study examining whether or not a new drug can lower blood pressure. The file contains before and after treatment blood pressure scores, as well as change scores (each how much each subject’s score changed). Using an independent sample t-test, determine if the “change” scores for the treatment and control differed significantly. Record the mean after score, the t-value, degrees of freedom, and significance level (2-tailed) of the t-test.
Mean “Newdrug” score = Mean “Control” score =
t = p = Would you reject or accept H0? Explain your answer.
2. The “WeightLoss.sav” file on moodle contains data from a study on how a particular drug affects weight loss. The weights of 6 men and 6 women were taken before being prescribed the drug. Their weights were again measured after 3 months of taking the drug. Use the appropriate t-test in SPSS to evaluate whether or not the drug was effective in losing weight.
Mean “before” score = Mean “after” score =
t = p = Would you reject or accept H0? Explain your answer.
3. Still using the “WeightLoss.sav” file, use SPSS to see if a person’s age correlates with
how effective the drug was.
r = p = Reject H0? =
