Question 4. Give some real-life examples of organizations that use each of the four different types of teams described in this chapter. Is the type of team structure used by each organization effective, or not?
I currently work for a company that specializes in training and they use manager lead teams. The responsibility lies on the manager to set objectives, goals and functionality of the team. The manager is heavily involved and offers opinions. This type of management has been effective for as long as the company has been in business; 42 years.
An organization using self-managing teams is Worthington Industries, a steel manufacturer. This type of company allows their employees to make decisions themselves without inquiring to management. Based on their “out of the box” hierarchy, this is an effective way of managing that promotes open thinking.
An organization that utilizes self-directing teams is Warner Lambert. They utilize self-directing teams to expedite new-product roll out. Self-directed teams are teams that are able to set their own goals and objectives. This effective method promotes innovation.
Another type of team is self-governing, Gerdau, steel manufactures use this type. They instill in their employees, feelings of personal ownership, in the decisions of the company. The company promotes this type of thought process to encourage an environment that fosters participation. This is not always effective, but it is working for Gerdau, because they promote and encourage this method (Thompson, 2014).
