Choose ONE of the following questions and write an 8-page answer to that question (double-spaced, with footnotes as necessary). Paper topics are due no later than Friday, May 1. The final paper will comprise 25% of your grade. o Explain Augustines view of civil government (including his ideas about just war) and critique it. Is Augustine realistic? Unrealistic? Relevant? Choose two of the theological positions we studied in this unit (two from the list of Luther, Calvin, the Anabaptists, Jones/Thurman, Niebuhr); compare and contrast Augustines view with those two positions. If you took RELG 393A: Religion and Violence, you may not choose this topic for your paper. o Contemporary megachurch-style congregations seem to have little interest in art and architecture. How much do art and architecture really matter to worship and theology? Are these traditions still relevant? What combination of art and architecture add significantly to theological understanding and provide the greatest enrichment of the worship experience? Make your argument in conversation with one of the theologians and one of the architects we studied. o In Jesus and the Disinherited, how does Howard Thurman define the ecclesia? What does he believe to be the purpose of Christian community? Compare and contrast Thurmans ecclesiology with two of the theologians we studied in this unit. Copies of Jesus and the Disinherited are on reserve at the Wise Library on the Downtown Campus. If you did Paper 2 on Thurman, you may NOT do your final exam on Thurman. o Develop your own sacramental theology. Define the sacraments. Why are you arguing that those practices are sacraments? Why are you arguing that certain practices are not sacraments? Craft your argument in response to the work of at least 2 theologians we studied in this unit. You may argue against those theologians or you may use their work to support your argument.
