Week One

I have chosen the painting Carravegio, Calling of Saint Mathew in Contarelli Chapel San Luigidei Francessi in Rome Italy. It was done between 1599-1600 by Caravagio who was inspired by Michaelangelo and his painting depicts Jesus with his right raised. This is the hand that is right under the cross of the window. This of course is same hand that was to be nailed to a cross when Jesus was crucified. Thus it meant his blood would wash and redeem the sins of people like Matthew who was a tax collector.

The other painting is the Bernini in St Peters Square in Vatican. It depicts the obelisk that was was transported to Rome by Caligula in 37 AD. It was originally created in Heliopolis in year 2400 BC. Then Augustus had it moved to Alexandria when he was in power. Then in 37 AD, Caligula moved it to Rome and placed in the Circus of Nero.I chose the paintings because they exemplify a sense of richness and an overt emotional theme. Thus these two paintings that sought to evoke emotional states in the viewers by appealing to their senses. This is because life in 17th century Europe had suddenly become a competition between two powerful forces.

Hobbes alleges that we should always regard our governments as the absolute authority. He argues about the liberty of subjects disobeying some of their government's rules. He argues that subjects retain the right to self-defense against the sovereign power, thus giving them the right to disobey or resist when their lives are threatened. He also gives them a lot of rights to resist when their families or even their honor are at stake. These exerpts have intrigued those who study Hobbes. Thus his ‘inalienable rights’or the the “true liberties of subjects”—are incompatible with his defense of absolute sovereign power.

Lorke on the other hand argues that political power is that power which every man, in the state of nature, has given up to the hands of the society. Then to the leaders, whom the society has set over itself with the belief and trust that it shall be employed for their good and the safety of their property. Now this power, which every man has, is to use those means for the preservation of his own property. As nature allows him, he can punish the breach of the law of nature in others for preservation of himself and the rest of mankind.

Therefore I agree with Hobbes assertions that we place authority on our rulers to use it to protect us.

On the issue of whether i think that an autobiography or fictional account by a slave (such as Phillis Wheatley and Olaudah Equiano) is more persuasive than a biography or fictional account by a white author (such as John Gabriel Stedman or Aphra Behn), I think that those stories that were told by mere slaves are more persuasive because they tell thir personal story of what they went through and experienced. White autors just research on various topics and then try to argue a case out of them.Represantation of slavery in artistic represantations were more compelling since they provided a clear picture than just telling stories. In todays worl use of audio like radios and visuals like televisions can adequately depict the true picture of slavery.

One of the works of Beethoven that I seek to analyse is Read a three part essay on Beethoven - The Revolutionary by a writer as well as a broadcaster, Stephen Johnson. He is a presenter with Radio's Discovering Music episode.Beethoven Beethoven lived through a period of epochal change that was taking place globally. For example,in Britain, another kind of revolution had begun. This would one day affect all of Europe: the Industrial Revolution. Therefore when Beethoven died, his image had been transformed into that of a romantic hero rather than villain. It is alleged that as Beethoven's funeral parade made its way through the streets of Vienna, an old woman was heard saying that they were burying the general of the musicians. Napoleon Bornaparte may have failed before, but there was a growing glimmer of hope, more so among idealistic young people, that the torch of liberty might now be taken up by the Beethoven.
