Introduction and background information
Development of Robotics is a field in science which endeavors at researching the developmental mechanisms, prototype and constraints that empower eternal and open-ended learning better skills and new know-how in personified machines. Research has shown that the computer technology has evolved over five generations. The first generation consisted of simple machines and equipment that were very inefficient but as more study and research was done, the next generation of computers was always improved. Now we are at the 4th generation where the computer almost does everything for the human beings and this is evident because nowadays people can study and transact business with anyone in this world, regardless of time and their location on this world now acknowledged as a global village. The fifth generation of computers is expected to be robotic and they will exactly behave like human beings, they will take over most of the work just to ease on the roles of the humans. This has brought a number of discussions and critiques both for and against. In this paper I will argue that excessive developmental robotics is not necessary.
Robotic Development will rob the people working for the minimum wage jobs. According to Turkle Shery (2011), “Sherry Turkle: 'We're losing the raw, human part of being with each other” the robots will be expected to do the dirty works such as sewer cleaning, dangerous works such as window cleaning on the tall skyscrapers on our cities, harvest fruits for farmers on the tall trees, assist doctors and surgeons in operation and assist intelligence people dispose of bombs. It is important to note that all these works are difficult and dangerous yet there are people who do them and eat from the people. The people working on these different fields will be rendered jobless because the robots are taking over their works. More and more people in the world especially the youths complain of lack of jobs and by bringing the robots will be like adding salt to the wound. This is because these robots may just be too perfect is working out these jobs and the need and value for human being will diminish leading to great laying off of workers in order to replace them with the robots. There will be intense competition amongst the different companies as they will be competing on who has the most robots working for them to ensure efficiency because they can work non-stop unlike human beings. This will lead to loss of jobs and people will not be able to afford their basic needs and the rich will continue being richer while the poor and the middle class become poorer and this is according to according to Turkle Shery in the article 'We're losing the raw, human part of being with each other”
According to Sharkey (2010), "Social Behavior and Communication in Biological and Artificial Systems”safety is an issue of concern. Some robots have been designed to behave like soldiers and are sent in war torn countries to fight and most people will care less because America is not affected by civil war and therefore, they are not sure of what these robots are capable of. When these robots are sent to war, the question that comes into play, is that do they know their target or are they just going to ‘clear’ everything they come across. It is feared that women and children will be the most vulnerable when these robots are deployed in a war torn country as they would kill anything and destroy everything in that country, they have not that capability to behave like human beings an feel pity. Coming closer to our country, how sure are the experts that the robots will not harm the users especially when they are left with children. Relying too much on these technology will certainly lead to the destruction of the human life as they have not been proven to be 100% safe.
Sharkey states that robots cannot replace animals that are human beings and pets. Robot companions such as Paro have been designed to imitate the aspects of a pet because they are soft and cuddly. Some people will also prefer to have robots as life companions and little do they know that no matter how much these equipment are made to imitate human beings and the pets, they will never replace the value of a human being. Paro as a pet will maybe behave like a cat but will not do what all cats do. Probably it won’t chase rats and play around with the owner like a real cat would do. Going further to companions, having a robot as a companion is fear of responsibilities and the robot will not fully satisfy the needs of the other spouse because they simply don’t feel. For example a man having a robot as a wife will not have children of his own because the robots cannot procreate and furthermore, this man will be lonely, what kind of conversations will they have with the robotic wife? Moreover, the man chooses to adopt children, how does he tell the children as they grow up that the robotic equipment they see cooking at home is their mother?
A study by Brown (2003) revealed that others believe that robotic development is a good thing and it is the next level of development in that they can increase social interaction for those who have trouble creating relationships with humans. However, Shery Turkle (2011), illustrates that First of all, it is not possible to have a relationship with a robot and certainly that is not increment in social interaction. It is another level of loneliness and decrease in social interaction. The word social comes from society and society is made up of human beings and therefore, social interaction means socializing more with humans and not robots.
Another study by Brown (2003) showed that the robots will make life easier but at what cost? These equipment are expensive and currently the world is undergoing economic problems and the people who will be able to afford these equipment are the few rich individuals who will eventually prefer these equipment to human labor. They may make life easier for the few rich individuals and make it even tougher for the poor in the society.
Others have claimed that these robots can perform jobs are considered to be unsafe for humans and the questions that many ask themselves is that before these robots, who were doing these jobs? This is just another excuse in order to have the robots replace the human labor. Currently, there are people doing these jobs that are considered unsafe and they get paid monthly and get even big benefits but what will happen when robots take over their jobs? They will become jobless and won’t be able to afford basic needs.
Conclusion
Robotic developments is not the best move for the people in the world right now because their safety cannot be confirmed. They cannot replace human beings and people should be satisfied with the level computer science has reached now and choose not to pursue it further as it may be the downfall of human life.
