Why do laws exist?

All societies have laws – but why do different laws exist?

Most laws are made to keep people safe. For example, you mustn’t / don’t have to / can kill or hurt another person. On the road, you 1 don’t have to / can’t drive too fast.

There are also many laws to organize society. You 2 have to / mustn’t / can drive on the same side of the road. You 3 have to / mustn’t / can steal or damage another person’s possessions.

Other laws educate people to do the right thing. In some countries, everybody 4 can / must / doesn’t have to vote in an election.

A future in film?

Many people love films and dream of working in the film industry one day. Two young people who dream of a future in films told us how they are starting out.

A James (17) loves films and wants to be a film director. Every weekend he works as a cinema attendant. He checks people’s tickets as they arrive and helps them find seats. ‘After that, I sit at the back of the cinema and watch the film. Last weekend I watched the same science fiction film six times! My friends think that’s really boring, but I find it fascinating! I like most kinds of films, but I’m not too keen on musicals or romances!’

B ‘When everybody leaves at the end of the film I tidy the cinema. It’s amazing how much rubbish people leave under their seats – sometimes it’s really disgusting. But I don’t mind. This job’s just right for me at the moment.’

C Annabel (20) works in a restaurant. In her free time she is a film extra – an actor who appears in the film, but doesn’t usually speak. Most extras don’t get much money, but Annabel is a dancer so she can earn slightly more. Sometimes extras speak a few lines in a film, and these are paid the most. ‘I’m not famous, of course,’ says Annabel, ‘but I have appeared in a few films.’

D ‘Some people do this work for the money, but for me it’s a hobby. I adore films, and I’d love to act in a comedy one day. A day working as an extra is much longer than a day in the restaurant. It’s very hard work and isn’t well paid. I never get bored as I really like watching how the actors and director work together. It’s fascinating.’

Car Crime Stories

A Jenny’s car was stolen and she didn’t have much money to buy a new one. Eventually, she found a cheap one and bought it. Three weeks later, the problems started. First it was the oil. Then, much more seriously, the brakes stopped working.

Jenny took it to a garage and was shocked when they told her she had been the victim of a serious crime. Her ‘new’ car had originally been two cars – parts of two old cars had been used to make a new one.

B Adrian bought a new car. He went to the post office to pay his car tax. The assistant checked on the computer and told Adrian there was a problem. His new car was a stolen car. She advised Adrian to contact the police. Just like Jenny, Adrian didn’t know the true story about his car’s past when he bought it.

C Karen got into her car and put her handbag on the passenger seat. It was a hot day so she opened the windows. When she stopped at some traffic lights, someone reached into the car and stole her handbag.

D Jim filled his car with petrol at the garage. When he went inside to pay, he left the keys in the car. Someone stole his car while he was paying for the petrol.

E Beverly parked her car outside her house one evening. It had been a hot day and Beverley had opened the sunroof. She checked the doors and windows were closed, but she forgot the sunroof. During the night thieves stole the car stereo.
