Section 1: Computation of Grade Point Average (GPA) (Using data in your education)

To compute the GPA for the quarter, each letter grade is converted to the grade point equivalent listed in your course syllabus , section entitled as Berkeley College Grading System. Then, that grade point is multiplied by the number of credits designated for the course. This procedure is followed for each course.

Next, the number of grade point equivalents for all courses is added. That total is then divided by the total number of credits attempted for the quarter. The result is the quarter GPA.

Your task is to compute your Grade Point Average (GPA) for your first quarter at Berkeley College if you received the following grades as described below:

Section 2: Temperature Conversions

Facts:

Countries That Use Celsius Today

· Nearly all of the countries in the world use the Celsius system. These include most of Africa, South America, Asia, the Middle East Australia and Europe. In the early 1970s, the United Kingdom switched from Fahrenheit to Celsius.

Countries that Do Not Use Celsius

· Fahrenheit has remained the official scale of temperature for both the United States and Belize. Some Central American countries use American measurements for weights and volumes, but measure temperature in Celsius. Additionally, Canada has retained Fahrenheit as a secondary temperature system.

In this section, you will use an external source of information such as the internet to get six different high temperatures for six different locations. The first three data you gather will be the temperature using the Fahrenheit scale (F). Then you will convert the Fahrenheit temperature (F) to Celsius temperature (C) to complete table 1.

The next three data you gather must be the temperature using the Celsius temperature (C). Then you will convert the Celsius temperature (C) to Fahrenheit temperature (F) to complete table 2.

You will need to know the following formula:

Celsius temperature is five ninths the difference of Fahrenheit temperature and thirty-two

C = (5/9)(F-32)

Section 3: Solving equations (Using data to make your best shopping decision)

A. If you have or had a job, write down the approximate net amount that you get (got) paid each week. If you never had a job, please pick a number between $195.00 and $290.00 as your weekly net pay.

B. Assume that you will save $57.50 each week from your net pay. Calculate the percent of your net weekly pay that you will be saving.

C. Decide on an item that you would like to buy (that usually cost over $399.99). Conduct a search to find the best price for this item. State the item, the sale price and the Web site where you found the item for this particular price.

D. NJ has a 7 % sales tax rate and the NY sales tax rate is 8 ¼ %.

a. In what state do you usually do most of your shopping?

b. Calculate the final, after-tax, price that you will pay for the item.

E. Assuming that you already had $75 saved, substitute all the known quantities into the formula that follows to create an equation with one unknown value. Solve the equation and determine the minimum number of weeks that you will need to save in order to have enough money to purchase this item.

(Final Price) = (Weekly Savings) (number of weeks) + (Amount already saved).

Note the minimum number of weeks must be a whole number correctly.

Section 4- Using data to make your best investment decision

According to CNN-Money, the average total monetary gifts that people usually received for a major life accomplishment such as graduation, marriage, the birth of a child, buying a new home, engagement and so forth range from $2,500 to $10,000 inclusively.

To celebrate one of your major life accomplishments, you received several monetary gifts from your family and friends. Assume that the total amount of monetary gifts you received was in between the stated range.

a) How much money did you receive?

b) You decided to invest your money by opening a 5-year Certificate of Deposit (CD). Search the following website to investigate which bank will give you the best offer.
