The Relatedness of Reading and Writing Skills

This Assignment addresses the following course outcome(s):

CE310-2: Examine the relatedness of reading and writing skills in children’s literacy development.

CE310-4: Compare children’s literature in a variety of genres.

The objective of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of the relatedness of reading and writing.

There is a strong connection between reading and writing development and children learn these processes at the same time, rather than one before the other. In fact, children’s explorations with writing can support the development of reading skills and wide exposure to reading will also enhance their writing. For this Assignment, you will have the opportunity to examine this connection and consider how reading can help support writing and how writing can help with reading.

For your Unit 3 Assignment, you will prepare a PowerPoint® that examines the relatedness of reading and writing skills in children’s literacy development. Use the Unit 3 readings and videos in completing this assignment. You may also want to review the Unit 2 Reading 1 on “Stages of Literacy Development,” as well. The final paragraph of that reading focused on the reading-writing connection. You may do some online research as well. Just remember to include any sources you use in your references in APA format.

Use the PowerPoint template located in Doc Sharing or you may create your own PowerPoint to discuss the relatedness of reading and writing. Be sure to format your PowerPoint as follows. The title of each slide should appear at the top of the slide and you should use bullet points and brief phrases to support each title point.

Explain how reading activities can enhance all literacy skills (particularly writing). Some points to address on this slide:

 How do print-rich environments, environmental/functional print support literacy development? What happens when children notice print in their environment to support writing?

 How does environmental print/functional print help children to see a “real life” need for reading and writing?

 What is the difference between storybook reading and classroom read alouds? How can we use these opportunities to enhance literacy skills? What strategies can support literacy development during these activities?

Slide 4 Title: Shared Writing

Explain how shared writing supports reading. Some points you might want to address on this slide:

 What are shared writing and interactive writing and how do these support literacy development?

 What are the benefits of invented (temporary) spelling?

 How does children’s writing lead to practice in phonics?

 Why are these types of stories (shared/interactive writing) easy for children to read?

 How do these stories motivate children to read?

 How can shared writing help children begin to see themselves as readers and writers? How do these experiences help children see the connection between speaking and the printed word?

Slide 5 Title: Literacy-Enriched Play Centers

Explain how literacy-enriched (or dramatic) play supports literacy development (reading, writing, speaking). Some points to consider:

 What is dramatic play? How is it a fun/nonthreatening way to explore reading and writing?

 Why will this encourage children to practice their reading/writing?

 What is an example of a dramatic play “theme” and some literacy (reading/writing) “props” you could include? (ex. “restaurant,” “doctor’s office,” “school,” etc.)

Slide 6 Title: Exploring Different Genres

Choose at least 4 genres and explain the differences between them. Include examples of real stories for each genre (title/author) and explain why they are good examples of each genre. What is the benefit of exposing children to each genre? Some genres you might consider; counting books, alphabet books, realistic fiction, nonfiction, biography, fantasy, narrative, poetry, folktale, fairy tales, etc.

Slide 7 Title: References (include references to your book, web articles, videos, and any other resources you used to prepare your PowerPoint). Be sure to use APA format for your references and to review the Unit 3 Assignment Rubric in your Syllabus.
