John - Introduction

Most immigrants come from third world countries seeking to find a better way of life,

with more freedom and human rights. Along with those rights these immigrants come for better

working wages and a better life for their children, where they can be safe and kept away from

harm's way. Most of these families come from countries that have very high crime rates and fear

for their lives and their children’s lives, but sometimes these families leave their countries only to

be placed in places where crime exists in the United States. Jose is one of these children whose

families left El Salvador to get away from the crime and drugs and only ended up in a relatively

similar place just the difference is that it​’​s in the United States.

Jose was born in El Salvador and lived their until he was about three years old, his

parents moved away from El Salvador in the 1980s to protect their family from the FMLN

(​explain what this is) ​and from the drug war that existed in their city. Jose got to the United

States and his family was successful in leaving. Since the family had no money, they moved in

with his father’s cousin in an apartment in Watts ​, a​. Watts is ​ notorious ​area ​for ​having ​extreme

drug and crime rates.​crime and drugs ​.​ flowing in and out of this area. Growing up in this

dangerous place,​ ​Jose was exposed to a lot of events related to crime and drugs ​. One experience

that Jose recalled was seeing his older cousin Miguel get shot in the middle of the night. Jose
