Northern America and Latin America

Different Regional geography may imply similarity or even differences in various aspects such as regional physical landscape, economy, geopolitics, and development population and culture. On a general view, North America and Latin American regions presents considerable similarities yet appears different from one another in some way. Considering Latin America, The region lies in the American plate which host the highest waterfalls such as the Angel water falls in the Venezuela, the Kaieteur falls located in Guyana, the world’s largest river, the Amazon River, world’s historically the most elongated ranges called the Andes as well as incomparably high mountains such as the Aconcagua which is about 6,962 and vast tracks of rainforests as well as the largest highly navigable lake globally named Lake Titicaca. These features are for many years been uninterrupted (Rumley, & Minghi, 2014).

North American region’s physical geography; the northern sub-region is covered by the American Cordillera which is marked by the new rocky mountains in the western portion as well as Appalachian Mountains in the east side while its highest peak the Denali only stands at 6194 meters considerably less compared to the highest in Latin America; the Aconcagua (Rumley, & Minghi,2014). North is covered by many glacial lakes such as the great lakes. Most of its watersheds pour in the east that is the Mississippi alongside Rio Grande drain in the Gulf of Mexico while St. Laurence pours its water into the Atlantic Ocean.

In regards to geophysical factors, Latin American has more physical resources than the North America. Physical factors considerably influence region’s economy. For instance; Latin America has several varying enormous biomes which make it host sub-regions with relatively same climate (Badia-Miró, Carreras-Marín & Meissner, 2014). More than eighty percent of Latin American is located in the tropical and subtropical. Also controlled by low pressure, Latin American has Amazon Jungle, which is the biggest rainforest in the world. In addition, most of the Latin American region is located in the south of the equator, so the season is just opposite with North American.

These features make the Latin America very diversified in terms of plants and animals compared to the North America, which is only proud of the old Rockies, especially the Appalachia, and the great lakes and a few other physical features. Economically, the Latin America has more minerals that range from gold, copper, iron ore, petroleum, and tin to silver. These resources have been the greatest source of income to the Latin America remarkably in times of war and/or rapid economic growth among developed countries. Remarkably, for years, North America has majored in producing one commodity (Badia-Miró, Carreras-Marín & Meissner, 2014). This strategy has been a risky venture due to instability in the market prices making the economy stagger leading to numerous geopolitical instabilities (Badia-Miró, Carreras-Marín & Meissner, 2014). So far, the Latin America states have been working hard to diversify their economy to achieve stability.

On the other hand North America has plenty of minerals especially in the Rockies which host millions of tons of coal and also plenty of iron ore, silver and gold. Geopolitical stability has allowed the nations in the region develop far beyond the Latin America (Agnew, 2014). The North American countries have relatively the most stable geopolitics (Agnew, 2014).US in particular has led by example by embracing democracy and the region has followed suit. Democratic policies in the North America has allowed them integrate freely with other regions and generally the globe hence the enormous economic growth in a time when the Latin America struggled to find its right economic feet and social development (Agnew, 2014). There is no doubt that America is the best country in the world of economy.

Latin America used to be colonized by Spain and Portugal; therefore, most countries have a hard history. Europeans used Plantation economy to control Latin America and develop their own economy. At one time in the 20th century, the Latin America nations embraced cold war. Countries such as Argentina spent almost a fifth of annual budget in military (Agnew, 2014). Bolivia-Paraguay alongside Peru-Ecuador fought the last inter-state battle. The regions terrain was preferably the best for battles. In this era the region was reined by dictators, forcing it lag behind in terms of development with much resources and life lost in the unnecessary battles (Agnew, 2014). In spite of that, most countries located in Latin America are the best in the group of developing countries.

The Latin American countries have majorly switched to the political left in early 21st century after experiencing numerous incidents of dictatorship and military rule as especially Brazil, Chile Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay (Gwynne, & Cristobal, 2014). There has been the tendency to apply protectionist laws which really undermine worldwide integration otherwise promoting local development (Agnew, 2014). Currently, the region has founded intergovernmental body to reasonably intend to merge already imposed custom union, that is, Mercosur alongside Andrea community to form number three global trade bloc by size in the world (Agnew, 2014). This transition has seen the region achieved stability and economy growth in the recent past. However, no doubt the North American region is by far stable than the Latin American.

Political stability, economic growth and highly mineral rich physical geography have triggered booming population growth in the Latin America since the second decade in the 21st century. Latin America recorded a population of 588.0 million compared to 942 million in North America (Gwynne, & Cristobal, 2014). On the other hand, North America is on the stage 4 of the NGR and Latin American is on the stage 3. That clearly shows that availability of resources may not mean much to development if other factors are not reorganized. What’s more, most Latin American are living in big cities, for example, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. However, there are positive developments in population growth in Latin America such as in Brazil.

Today, Brazil and other Latin nations have recorded huge population of young people. Large population is good indicator of development in the social system such as health care and food sufficiency alongside economic growth since the large population offers advantage to local trade (Gwynne, & Cristobal, 2014). In the Latin America, unlike North American region where the society embraces mass culture, there are distinguished cultural practices by country because the nations had not open borders previously. Because of colonization, European influences Latin American culture so much like language and religion. Most people speak Spanish and 93% of religious people are Christian. (baidu, 2012) However, recent developments, that is, the trade bloc may end up persuading the regions to share culture as in the North American states. Therefore, it is clear that as much as both regions resemble, they are also distinguishable.
