How to Do Well:

Show them the list so that they can choose which they’d feel most comfortable talking about. You may select a different event if your interviewee feels more comfortable with something else that is similar and related to communication or a communication event. If you choose a different event, indicate so in your paper. If they don’t want to choose, you can choose for them. If you do that, pick something you’re interested in so you will enjoy hearing and writing about it.

For each event or type of coverage, ask them how old they were, and what the experience was like. Ask them about what they most remember about the experience, who they were with when they experienced it, and how they felt at the time.

Paper Requirements:

In the paper, provide a brief summary of the interview. Make comparisons to material we have talked about in class or that was described in the book. If it doesn’t fit exactly with what we talked about, just generalize about how we described the time period and the media the person is talking about from lecture materials or the book.

To get a good grade, make certain you do the following:

a. Provide your name and the event you asked about.

b. Provide the interviewee’s age (whatever age they tell you is fine – for example, if they say “over 60” and you know they are quite a bit over 60, that’s ok – just whatever age they want to tell you).

c. Briefly explain how you know the person – a friend, relative, stranger, whatever the relationship is. You don’t need to provide the name.

d. Provide a brief summary of the interview – what they talked about. It should be about 2-3 paragraphs.

e. Compare their description to anything that you may have learned from class or the book (1-2 paragraphs). If we didn’t cover exactly what they are talking about (e.g., President Nixon’s resignation), provide a context by describing what you’ve learned about that era in communication history. Tell us about anything that surprised you or differed from any description given in class or the text.

f. Explain what you learned from the assignment (1-2 paragraphs).

All work must be your own work. Remember to cite any outside resources you use in your answer. If you refer to notes or class lectures or videos, just indicate those, such as (according to lecture….. or In the Color Adjustment video… or in the “Trip to the Moon” video that was part of lecture… ) If you refer to outside sources, such as websites, you can indicate those with footnotes. Any footnote style is acceptable, as long as it provides enough information for us to find the resource. So this is acceptable for purposes of this exam:

1. http://www.cinemamuetquebec.ca/content/movies/17?lang=en

This is not acceptable:

1. A website about silent movies in Quebec

Always use quotation marks if you are using a quotation (someone else’s words)

Paper Le ngth: 1 - 2 pages, single -spaced , 12-pt. font . Narrative s tyle and format is your choice, but put it in sections a through f that correspond to the points above.

U pload the paper in “d oc” or “rtf” format to both Mobius and Carmen . Because we are getting close to final grade due dates, early papers are appreciated.
