Weekly Summary #1

Each week for the next 4 weeks, you will be completing a summary assignment. The instructions for this week is below. Students that put forth excellent quality work will be awarded extra credit points.

Week #1:

1. Choose a company that you will focus on for all of the assignments. Once you select a company, you cannot switch! Some notes on choosing a company:

a. Choose a company that you can obtain lots of information on. This can be either a publically traded company or a company you work for or own.

b. Companies in traditional industries (manufacturing, consumer discretionary) may be easier to work with.

c. Resources: BusinessWeek, SEC Online (Edgars), NU Library yahoo.com/finance.

2. Put together an excel worksheet with the income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows for the most recent year.

3. Create a common size income statement and balance sheet for your company. (Most recent year).

4. Perform ratio analysis on your company for the most recent year. At a minimum you should have 10 ratios. (I want to see the calculations).

*Note: During class periods students will be called on to present their work to the class. Please be prepared to present during any class session.*

Submission Instructions: Summary due no later than Saturday at Midnight. Turn in via Dropbox.

Week #2:

This week we will focus on capital structure for your company as we will be discussing stocks and bonds during class:

1. Analyze the equity of the company so that the reader understands the company’s equity position. Some items to include: number of shares, market price, EPS, PE ratio, book to market value.

2. Analyze the debt of the company with a particular focus on bonds. Some items to include: number of bonds issued, current price, YTM, rating, market value versus book value, debt to equity ratio, times interest earned.

*Note: During class periods students will be called on to present their work to the class. Please be prepared to present during any class session.*

The week we continue our look at capital structure.

1. What is your company’s WACC? (Be sure to clearly breakout the components)(‘Darkside’ article will help with this).

1. Is your company’s capital structure optimal?

1. Calculate your company’s payout ratio.

Week #4:

1. What is your company’s NOWC for the past 3 years? (I want to see your calculations)

0. Is it growing or shrinking?

0. Is it sufficient?

0. Do they need to raise more capital?

0. How do they compare to a competitor organizations NOWC? (I want to see your calculations for the competitor NOWC)

1. Has the company completed any interesting mergers or acquisitions?

1. What is your opinion on this company? Would you invest $100,000? What would you expect to get at the end of 5 years in return for your investment?
