Part A - Critical Thinking Questions

1. Assume that in an interview for the job you want, you are asked the following questions, answer the questions.

a. What can you do for us?

b. How well has your performance in the classroom prepared you for this job?

c. What do you expect to be doing in 10 years? In 20 years?

d. What income goals do you have for those years (10 and 20 years ahead)?

e. Why should I rank you above the others I am interviewing?

f. Did you do the best work you are capable of in college?

g. What are the qualities of the ideal boss?

2. Distinguish between the print resume and the electronic resume. When would each be most appropriate?

3. What is meant by parallelism of headings?

4. Describe the cover message and resume you would write (a) immediately after graduation, (b) 10 years later, and (c) 25 years later. Point out similarities and differences, and defend your decisions.

5. Discuss some of the advantages that writing a thank-you note to the interviewer gives the writer.

Critical Thinking Problem

6. Project yourself three years past your graduation date. During those years, you have had good experience working for the company of your choice in the field of your choice. (Use your imagination to supply this information). Unfortunately, your progress hasn’t been what you had expected. You think that you must look around for a better opportunity. Your search through the classified advertisement in your area newspapers, online, and in The Wall Street Journal turns up one promising possibility (you find it). Write a cover message that skillfully presents your qualifications for this job. (You may make logical assumptions about your experience over the three-year period). For class purposes, attach the advertisement to your message. (You may need to scan the advertisement and then upload it).
