An I/O professional has the unique opportunity to both participate in research for the development of the field and apply in practice the fruits of such research efforts. I/O professionals may suggest new lines of research or even conduct their own scientific studies. Conversely, I/O professionals may choose to focus exclusively on the practitioner side of the continuum.
Using resources, locate an empirical article that represents a strong example of the dual nature of Industrial/Organizational (I/O) research and practice. Then, do the following:

The practitioner–scholar continuum refers to the tendency of professionals in I/O to engage primarily in activities that develop knowledge (scholar) or apply that knowledge (practitioner) in organizational settings. Somewhere in between the pure-scholar and pure-practitioner extreme points of the continuum is a place where many I/O professionals find themselves. Additionally, one’s position on this continuum is typically not static as I/O professionals tend to vacillate in their professional efforts, finding themselves at various times more involved in either scholarly or applied pursuits. In theory, the scholar–practitioner dichotomy should be an advantageous parsimony that contributes to the advancement of the I/O field. In reality, there is sometimes conflict and lack of communication between the two camps. There is quite a bit of debate on this tension in the relationship between scholars (sometimes referred to as researchers in the literature) and practitioners in I/O psychology and what can be done to improve relations for the benefit of all. There is almost always some type of panel discussion, symposium, or presentation on this topic at the annual Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) conference. As you prepare to graduate with your Master of Arts: Industrial Organizational Psychology (MAIO) degree, you will need to consider your place on this continuum. Wasserman and Kram (2009) provide an interesting narrative exploration of the dilemmas and opportunities professionals experience in navigating the practitioner–scholar continuum in their careers.
