Food for thought

What is your current workplace culture?

Workplace culture defined…

A workplace culture consists of the shared values and behavioral norms (what employees perceive as acceptable behavior) that impact how employees interact with you, each other, and customers.

Workplace culture impacts everything!

A workplace culture impacts every aspect of how things get done at work: how we make decisions, how we problem solve, how we create and innovate, how we work together, and how we succeed as an organization.

Workplace culture impacts everything!

Often times, the workplace culture is founded on what organizational leaders say, and more importantly, do, that helps to define and support what the shared values and behavioral norms should be.

A strong, healthy workplace culture

favorably impacts the performance of employees and the performance of the organization !!

It provides a sense of identity:

the more clearly an organization’s shared perceptions and values are defined, the more strongly people can associate with their organization’s mission and feel like a part of it.

A strong, healthy workplace culture

favorably impacts the performance of employees and the performance of the organization !!

It generates commitment to the organization’s mission:

there is a strong, overarching workplace culture, people feel they are part of a larger, well-defined whole and involved in the entire organization’s work.  Bigger than any one individual’s interests, culture reminds people of what their organization is all about.

A strong, healthy workplace culture

favorably impacts the performance of employees and the performance of the organization !!

It clarifies and reinforces standards of behavior:

culture guides words and deeds, making it clear what should be done or said in any given situation.

Topic In this Assignment you will write a descriptive report about the culture of a company or an organization based on background research and an interview of a professional person who is part of that culture. The concept of a “workplace culture” is well explained on this website:

http://humanresources.about.com/od/organizationalculture/a/culture.htm

Part 1

Research and write a report that investigates workplace culture in your desired field. Describe what the group is like in your own words.

Part 2

Select and interview a professional person in your field of interest. Ask questions about this person's workplace culture that will allow you to gain insights into aspects of the culture that he/she is a member of. Integrate the insights gained from the interview responses and your impressions into your written report.

Minimum requirements :

Cover page that includes your name, course and section number, date, and the assignment title.

Five pages clearly typewritten in college-level American English text (3 pages background text, 2 pages describing what you learned from the interview).

One reference page listing sources you discovered in your background research and used to support your descriptive writing in Part 1 (use APA citation).

After the reference page, include an Appendix with your interview questions and notes there.

APA format and style

Unit 7 Assignment

I will be sending out an email at the end of week 6 with more information, links, and suggested questions for your interview.

14

If you could describe your corporate culture in three words, what would you say?

If the local paper were going to run a four-page article about your company's culture, what would be impossible not to include?

What's the best part about working in this environment that I won't be able to see from just a walk around the office?

What are the most common complaints employees make about your company culture?

What do you love best about the culture here?

Unit 7 Assignment

Suggested interview questions

The bottom line:

You can't work where you don't feel comfortable.

You can't thrive where you don't feel at home.

And you can't grow where you don't feel welcome.

Therefore, the culture of an industry carries tremendous weight in preparing for your career.

The values of an industry – or of a particular company – should echo your own.

To make these questions more about the industry’s culture, rather than a specific company, just change a few words. For example: If you could describe the culture of nursing in three words, what would you say? What are the most common complaints junior accountants make about banking/insurance/etc culture? If the local paper were going to run a four-page article about “law enforcement culture”, what would be impossible not to discuss in that article?
