1. Major Paper (12 -15 pages)
This paper will be due at the end of the semester (no later than May 4). The paper is to be a synthetic research paper of your own design.
· Students are to meet with Dr. Clark no later than February 15 to discuss their proposed project and brainstorm on its feasibility and available resources.
· Project proposals must be submitted by February 22. Failure to submit an acceptable proposal by that time may lead to a failing grade for the project.
1. Proposals are to include a brief summary of the proposed topic and a preliminary bibliography.
· This project obviously does presume additional reading.
GENERAL RULES OF WRITING:
THESIS STATEMENT:
Every paper is to have a clearly defined thesis statement (see above). The statement should be marked by the phrase “I will argue…” or an explicit equivalent. Every paper must have this phrase.
THE THREE RULES OF QUOTATION:
1. A quote should only be used to illustrate a point you have made in your own words. Therefore:
2. A quote should never be a substitute for your own words. Furthermore:
3. A quote should always have a textual identification (i.e., your reader should not have to look to the citation to know its source).
PUNCTUATION:
1. Periods and commas always (that mean no exceptions) go inside closing quotations. This is an idiosyncrasy of North American orthography; the rest of the world does it the opposite way. Guess what? You’re in North America. Live with it. Do it right!
2. Superscript note numbers follow the closing punctuation and quotation. The only exception is colons; superscripts precede the colon (semi- and full).
IMPORTANT: ALL WRITING ASSIGNMENTS ARE TO FOLLOW CORRECT FORMATS, CORRECT GRAMMAR, WITH ALL NECESSARY CITATIONS, AND COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHIES (THAT MEANS NO EXCEPTIONS):
For bibliographical format, as well as all other questions of grammar and format, refer to the guidelines for Chicago style on the Myrin Library website, or go to:
http://www.dianahacker.com/resdo/ or http://www.bowdoin.edu/writing-guides/ .
A bibliography must refer to any and every work mentioned or used in your text, even if there is only one and it is obvious.
· All citations are to be done in footnote/endnote format.
PAPERS WITHOUT CORRECT CITATIONS OR COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHIES WILL BE RETURNED FOR CORRECTION AND CONSIDERED LATE.

A WORD ON ACADEMIC HONESTY: We all know broadly what plagiarism is, and it is assumed everyone seeks to avoid it. Unfortunately, there are slip-ups. There are four basic rules that you should always follow:
1. Anything that depends in any way on another source MUST BE CITED (this includes material that is not quoted or paraphrased);
2. Anything that in any way quotes from another source MUST BE CITED;
3. Anything that quotes from another source MUST BE IN QUOTATION MARKS. Mere citation presumes the thought is from the source but the words are yours, and that is plagiarism;
4. There is no such thing as over-citation. Under-citation is plagiarism.
As always, any paper that fails to adhere to these guidelines will automatically be counted as a "0" and reported to the Dean’s Office. Any offending paper will be included in the final grade calculation. Repeated offense will lead to expulsion from the course (and possibly from the College).
There is no excuse for plagiarism. At the least, it is sloppy; at worst, it is deliberately dishonest.

Research Statement
In this Research Project, I will do some research on the Chinese household and lineage in the southeastern province of Fujian during the Ming and Qing period (1368-1911) to find out how individuals and families confronted the crucial issues of daily life, how to minimize taxes or military conscription; how to balance the ideological imperatives of ancestor worship with practical concerns; how to deal with the problems of dividing the household estate. It will be divided into three parts.
1. The new interpretations of the Chinese domestic cycle
2. The relationship between household and larger kinship groups
3. The development of lineage society in south China
I will use the materials “Family Lineage Organization and Social Change in Ming and Qing Fujian” by Zheng Zhenman, whose research leads to an exploration of issues such as the relation of state to society and the compatibility of Chinese culture and capitalism. His book draws on important materials largely unknown to Western scholars, comes to novel conclusions about society in late imperial China, and illustrates the importance of the non-Western perspective in studying the history of the world outside the West.
My aim is to find the changes of old Chinese society for decades in Fujian from the relationship between the local families, the temporary economics and the religions.

ASAP!最好5天内好嘛?
