Introduction
The use of technology in the field of education is increasing constantly with the increase in technology arena. Online education and online courses are paving their way and credibly replacing the traditional style of teaching and education. The main concern about the online education and online courses is the lack of creativity, voice inflections, gestures, presentation, personal exposure etc. During the online courses the students cannot take the benefit of a face to face classroom and also the level of interaction slows down to a considerably lower level (Narozny, 2010).
Digital media is used in the online learning and courses to overcome this issue and to integrate the technology with the online courses. Digital media check this issue by removing the concerns about presentation in the online arena. It enables the creativity while including any material to the online course and also helps in assuring that the presented content satisfy the criteria of comfort and acceptability (Venable, 2011).
Effects of using digital media in online courses
Digital media can be used in the form of videos, podcast or desktop videos and made the content more presentable and more deliverable to the students. Digital media will create the outstanding interest of students in the course and will help them to apply their own creative skills to the content. The use of this technology will keep the content simple, interesting, presentable and approachable and hence driving maximum benefit out of it.
The use of digital media will inculcate the flexibility, persistence and playfulness in the online courses. It will increase the ability to work on a specific subject for a researcher and helps them to cope up with the technological changes. It also allows the researchers to understand that it is not enough to access the internet or web openly rather they have to go beyond it. The use of digital media does not restrict the scope of course but it allows learning anywhere and everywhere.
The aim of digital media is to facilitate researchers to articulate themselves effortlessly with the aid of innovative technology and does not restrict their skills to a fewer. It enables the ability to learn with on time knowledge and dedicated competencies and inculcates the aptitude to learn more and more while empowering the learners.
Digital media outlines the new scope and give online courses a new destination. It allows the learners to become more dexterous by creating a condition in which they enthusiastically connect each other and their professors. This integration becomes possible only with the aid of digital media and ready at hand source platforms. It enables composite thinking conduct and helps the learner to gain better verdict and approach (Venable, 2011).
Digital media also allows enhance the curiosity of the learners and provide them an open platform to perform and analyze their learning skills. It enables them an access to information in such a way which is creative and for value to them, which can be molded in the way they want for further learning or research. It helps the learners to develop a reflection of their ideas and critical thinking on the various factors relating to education and thus helps in better grasping of content in online courses (Scholz, 2011).
The irony for using the digital media in online courses is that it requires continuous experiment with the new phases of technology for both the teachers and learners. The learning and understanding of technology and digital media can never come to an end; it is a continuous process and needs updating after every short periods. Education with digital media is all about conducting repeated little experiments.
The use of digital media also created some adverse effects for the online courses; it places the learners and teachers outside their comfort zone and allows them to learn new technology and new changes. It creates confusion and discomfort in the course with excess of preparatory time and skills. The use of digital media creates higher expectations and higher ability of integration for understanding and grasping a new platform. It also provides various number of alternate choices for the learners which make their response an overwhelming and awe-inspiring.
Conclusion
The use of digital media in online courses not only widens the approach but also makes the content more presentable and more appealing. Learning can be best emphasized when the participants are interest driven in the particular field or subject and that is what digital media is doing. It is driving the interest based participation in the learners by its various forms and approaches (Scholz, 2011).
It stretches the learning process beyond the boundaries and gave the online courses a unique presentation and approach. But every coin has two sides and likewise every process has two context and approaches. On one hand while digital media is making the content more presentable on the other hand it creates ambiguity and confusions with so and so many options to choose from. It is also making the studies and content updating very frequent and thus involves complexity in retrieval while making it more approachable.
Thus, we can conclude that digital media has both negative and positive effects on online course, but its positive affects seems to empower all negative effects of its use (Narozny, 2010).
