PART II: PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Directions: Time Management.
Focus: Time management and converting fractions to decimals.
Background: A key element of being a successful student is finding the time to complete assignments and study. This activity will help you manage your time by identifying where you spend your time, and where you may find added time for schoolwork, if necessary.
1. Fill in the chart that follows. Change minutes to fractions by dividing by 60.
Example: 1 hour 45 minutes = 1 and 45/60 hours or 1 ¾ hours. Be sure and include some fractions in your chart; do not round all activities off to hours.
2. Convert the mixed numerals into decimal numbers. Note that 1 ¾ hours is equal to 1.75 hours, since ¾ = .75.
3. Fill in the hours spent in each activity for each day of a typical school week during the term using the decimal numbers. Include the weekend days. You may add other activities if necessary.
4. Add the hours in each column for each day; these should add up to 24 hours for each day.
5. Add across each row to get the total number of hours each week spent doing that activity. Enter these sums in the last column on the right.
6. Add the values in the column on the far right. This sum should equal 168.
7. After filling in the chart, answer the question that follows.
