Your team has been assembled to provide Information Technology consulting services to a newly formed fictitious company in the gardening tools and supplies Industry. This medium-sized company was formed by combining several smaller companies within the same industry into a single entity. Each of the smaller companies had their own IT system, and some were not so good, usually because the systems were cobbled together from different sources over the years. The new organization intends to avoid that undesirable outcome.
This organization intends to bring all of the disparate systems together into one comprehensive system. The plan is to implement an ERP system such as SAP or PeopleSoft as the core application for managerial control. That part of the transition will be outsourced to another team and is not part of your charter.
Your team was assembled by selecting individuals from some of those smaller companies described above, so you have never worked together before. Also, the levels of experience and training for the various team members can be quite variable.
Your mission is to develop an overall systems architecture plan from top to bottom for the new organization. This will involve several different platforms from the data center to the smartphone level including some levels in between. You may or may not be concerned with the specific source or brand name for a platform or subsystem as your team sees fit.
The team needs to consider all the possible roles that need to be supported in this organization that includes light manufacturing, sales, distribution, and customer support. A good portion of the sales staff will operate from mobile platforms while traveling to customer sites. The primary business channel is wholesale to other businesses but the organization intends to provide some in-house retail operations through brick & mortar facilities as well as online operations.
The overall assignment is to develop a comprehensive plan for the systems architecture for this fictitious organization in a form that would be appropriate as a PowerPoint slideshow for management. You may consider this as the means of presenting your conceptual plan.

The diagram illustrates the IT systems architecture with respect to the major business groups, their front-end interaction with the customer base and the back-end interaction with critical information and data.
The systems architecture accounts for the company’s current direct sales model while providing for the expansion into brick and mortar store fronts and e-commerce. It also plans to integrate manufacturing, distribution and customer service into the architecture for improved real-time production, inventory and sales tracking.

Information and Data
Orders/Sales:
The Order/Sales data unit includes transaction data, order tracking, all pertinent unit costing, taxes and shipping charges. It can be used by customer service, management, distribution, storefront staff and e-commerce staff.
Product Catalog:
The Product Catalog data unit includes images, descriptions and specifications for all products sold or supported by the company. This data unit will mainly be used by direct sales, storefront staff, e-commerce staff and manufacturing
Inventory
The Inventory data unit tracks existing warehouse and storefront inventory of products. Manufacturing, distribution, storefront staff, e-commerce staff, direct sales staff and management are expected to use this information.
Information and Data
- Corporate Documents
The Corporate Documents data unit includes all documents associated with the companies business policies, operating polices and any other business sensitive information. This information is expected to be accessed management and HR mainly, with other groups accessing function specific and general corporate documents as needed.
Employee Information
The Employee Information data unit includes all Personally Identifiable Information (PII) for employees. This information is extremely sensitive and only be accessed by HR; and management, under special circumstances.
Customer Accounts
The Customer Account data unite includes all information associate with customer logins, passwords, mailing addresses and phone numbers. This information is sensitive. Certain information will be accessible to customer service while groups such as distribution, direct sales and storefront staff will have access to limited amounts.
