Research Paper Topic:

Social Policies in International Comparison

 

Select a social policy area in a country/city of your choice and write a comparative social policy paper that analyzes the nature of the underlying social problem/issue, describes the corresponding policy framework and practice, and evaluates the outcomes -- all in order to find out what the U.S. could possibly learn from the country/city of your choice. In your paper, make sure to consider the following aspects:  

Start with a coherent, concise, and interest grabbing introduction and overview;

Describe the nature and extent of the social problem/condition/issue that underlies social policy and outline, in broad strokes, the major differences/similarities to those reported for the U.S.

Discuss how the city/country of your choice uses social policy(s) to address the problem again highlighting some general similarities and differences to U.S. policy and practice.

Evaluate the relative effectiveness of social policy vis-à-vis the U.S. and provide evidence as to which country/city performs better with regards to stated social policy outcomes;

Conclude by highlighting what the U.S. can learn from your country of choice in an attempt to improve policy practice domestically.

 

Instructions:

-You must identify the country/city of your choice and the social policy area you intend to analyze by February 24 the latest. This should give you time to conduct some preliminary research as to whether you can find sufficient information to write a paper. Social policy areas to investigate include a range of policies and programs including income support, health, pensions, immigration, housing, education, etc.

-The paper should be at least 10 pages in length (no longer than 15 pages), excluding bibliography and title page;

-The paper should be double-spaced with one inch margins and should contain page numbers;

-You must use at least four references other than those used in the course – reputable internet sources count as references

Provide an introduction summarizing your main arguments and a proper conclusion;

-You ought to work collaboratively  with class mates working on similar welfare systems (i.e. brainstorming, help with identifying literature and data, proofreading, etc.)but you must write your own paper. Any form of plagiarism is strictly prohibited;
