My Career Choice

Do you have a dream? Have you ever visualized what it would be like to achieve your lifelong dream? If so then you will understand my dream. Military service career first impressed me when I was a toddler. How they react fast to an emergency can give you an insight on how important the servicemen are in the society today. I am proud of my country, and pledge my loyalty to its authority; therefore serving in its military will be wonderful. Military personnel sacrifice their lives, time, and their loved ones for the service of their countrymen. They made a promise to defend the country at any cost and they do it with no reservations. They do not earn very big salaries but they commit themselves to work, it’s not the money that matters, but what they do for their country that matters.

There is always the honor and pride that accompanies the joy of serving people. They give their all for the safety of the citizens and they ask for nothing back for their services. I will be very grateful if I get a chance of enlisting in the near future because then my dreams will have been answered. There are some qualities that are learned in the military service such as determination, discipline and exercising self-control. These qualities go a long way in building us as individual.

There are many benefits that the military service gets such as education, free health care, free family interaction, introduction to effective support groups and cash bonuses also come in handy. These additional benefits serve as motivation to the servicemen to perform their duties to satisfaction (Henderson, P. (2007). The military personnel h

ave a thirty days paid vacation in a year. It’s important to keep the servicemen motivated this is because satisfied personnel performed their duties successfully as compared to unhappy employees. Education can be done while in service, this means it’s easy for the servicemen.

The life insurance that is offered to the military personnel ensures that his or her family is supported when they die. This gives comfort to the servicemen when they are in mission. The retirement benefits also help the older military personnel to plan for their future. Travel expenses for the servicemen are cheap as compared to the normal civilian; theirs is half the price in the plans. Housing is relatively cheap too. This is because they are given tax free housing allowance or even accommodation to those who don’t have families.

When an individual wants to join the military service there are some mandatory things a recruit should have, one of those things is a social security card, driver’s license and lastly his or her birth certificate (Howell, T. (2011).  These documents will help to ascertain if you are a U.S citizen and if you have committed any felony in the state, it shows an individual’s history and if they are fit to serve the nation. Another requirement is to bring an eyeglass or contact lenses case if you don’t have the eyeglass. You can wear the contact lens; this will help when checking if your eyes are physically fit for training and future participation in the service. A recruit should be presentable and decent during the enlisting day. Piercings should be removed and clothes with hilarious images should not be worn. Finally, it’s very important to have a good rest so that you can be fit for testing.

Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) is responsible for choosing the right candidates for enlistment. They take approximately two days but they provide food and lodgings to the aspiring candidates. The first step is taking the aptitude test, this will help the recruiter determine the kind of career the recruit will attend to if they succeed. They come in the form of multiple choices. The second step is the physical examination part. The most common tests are urine and blood tests, height and weight, alcohol and drugs use, hearing and vision and special tests that vary from men and women. The third stage is meeting the enlistment counselor who will help the recruit understand better the contract before signing. The fourth step on the other hand is where the recruit is ready to take the oath of enlistment, this happens when their career dimension has been determined. The recruits make a vow to obey the uniform code of military justice and to defend the constitution. Friends and family are invited to witness this event and congratulate their son or daughter.

Depending with the recruit an individual can report to training after the MEPS examination or they can wait for a year through a program known as Delayed Entry Program (Howell, T. (2011). This program is commonly used by recruits who are enlisted before they finish high school, they will have to wait a year until they finish school. I plan to enlist before I finish high school so as I can join training after school. Most high school students are considering the military because there are fewer job opportunities for an average youth and they will have a chance to fund their college studies while in service. In recent statistics unemployment between youths of age 16 to 24 is at 16%. This shows that it’s high as compared to employment rate in the whole country.

Military servicemen play an important role in the society, although they are not given the accolades that they deserve. Their primary role is to defend the state and its institution; they have to defend its borders and the people. The United States of America is a sovereign country and therefore they have to defend their citizens from external attacks as well as internal attacks. The military servicemen make a vow when enlisting to defend its constitution and its people.

They should safeguard people’s property and their lives, citizens should feel safe in their own countries. Another role is to aid of foreign policy, every country wants to be free and be able to protect its country’s interest. Backing your foreign policy decisions requires the strength of the military. An example is the Arab Israel war, it showed the impact of a strong military force and how they can subdue other nations with their might.

The military force can also aid the international bodies such as the UN in maintaining world peace and stability in the whole world. If there is unrest in other countries it affects the United States in one way or another. Other countries also contribute in the UN peacekeeping mission.

The military service gets their strengths from the society specifically the people they serve. They use the current technology and trends in their training and education facilities to produce soldiers who can readily adapt to this environment (Segell, G. (1997). The civilian society should collaborate with the military world for effective performance from its servicemen. For a long time now the civil society and the military have been at odds this is because of the assumption that the military abuse their power and the people fear them. The military should change this assumptions so as they can relate with civilians in a positive way.

One major accomplishment that the US military has attained is to fight off wars that have threatened their sovereignty. They have managed to also defend their allies for instance South Korea, Japan and many more. They also contribute extensively in supporting peacemaking operation like the UN operations. Their accomplishment can be seen on their role in North Atlantic Treaty Organization, they have shown a strong leadership and commitment in expanding this organization. They have also secured our borders making the citizens feel safe. Most importantly is the fight against terrorist acts in the country, apart from a few incidences that have occurred they have shown total control on terrorist’s attacks. They have also fought drug cartels in the country; through organized operations they have been able to counter the operations of these drug barons. With development of up to date arms they have proved to be up scaled in their fights as they say ‘you cannot go to war with 20th century machine guns’.

The military force has tried to promote equity in service. This can be seen by the rising number of women in the military. Although many regard this as a weakness on the part of the military force as various departments still don’t enlist women on their units. As compared to the past years women in the military have increased (Sherrow, V. (2007). They can play the same role as men in the military if given equal chance to those of their male counterparts. The marine’s corps doesn’t recruit women to their forces. Military can review the military plan to offer women more chances in the military because as to common belief women can also do it.

In conclusion, the military service plays an important role in the society and to the citizens of United States of America. Through the points highlighted on this paper, I intend to enlist on the military force and fulfill my dream. The advantages of being an officer far outdo the disadvantages; therefore, I have to ensure that I meet all the requirements needed to be recruited. Being a United States military man gives an individual prestige because nothing can compare with serving your own country.
