As a group of four members, we were assigned to design a tensile testing fixture. This tensile testing fixture is designed to teach high school student about materials science. To come up with the design ideas, we met many times as a group for brainstorming and researching about the project. We came up with different design ideas that could be used in our project. After that we divided the work between us, and each member has his own roles on the team.

One of my roles on the team is to define our customers. Wide variety of customers could use our project, but we are focusing on high school science teachers, to be our main target customers. Another role is to find the customer requirements and their need. One of the main requirement is the budget, which is under hundred dollars. That is one of the biggest issue that we met when designing our project. Another main requirement is make the fixture easy and simple to build. Because they do not have the enough skills and capabilities to build a complex one.

Design requirements and engineering characteristics were also set as my roles on the team. Some of the design requirements is to make the design repeatable which allow high school teachers to use the fixture as many as they want. Weight and size are one of the design requirements, they should be reduced to meet the customer needs.

Another role on the team is making house of quality stream line. It can show the relationship between customer requirements and engineering characteristics, and it is part of the quality function deployment. Figure 1 shows the house of quality streamline.

Figure 1: House of Quality

As a team we did some calculation to determine the perfect gauge sizes for the wire materials, also the force needed to reach the ultimate tensile strength. This helped us to check if the components will fit our design. We have not complete our prototype yet, so that we could not test it. In the future we are going to redesigned it if the test fail.
