Artifact Analysis Worksheet

An artifact is something made by a human. It can be anything that a human conceived of as art. For this assignment, you are being asked to find and share a human-crafted object or artifact. It can be anything that was crafted deliberately.

Make sure that your selection is electronically shareable and meaningful to you so that you can evaluate the piece with the following questions. Since you will be asked to share the object with fellow classroom members for Week 3’s assignment, avoid material that might be offensive or too personal for others to comment on. For example, if you selected a song that contained some cursing and graphic lyrics, there are radio friendly versions of most songs that would be more conducive to massive sharing.

Share your artifact in the space below and give a brief description. You can share the link, insert the image/picture, copy/paste, etc. Just make sure to cite the source of your artifact.

Note- You will also be asked to share just your artifact in the DocSharing area of our classroom next week. So make sure you save the info. There are instructions at the very end of this document about how to do that. You may want to do this now too.

My artifact is a song by Shirley Caesar “I Remember Mama.” This is song was one her most spiritual gossip song that she made remembering all the great things about her mother. She dedicated this song for Mother’s Day tribute to all mothers far and near.

In the space below, write a short paragraph about why you selected this artifact. Tell the reader the story of you and the selected artifact from beginning to end. In other words, what’s the story around this artifact as it connects to you.

I chose this particular artifact because not only on Mother’s Day, I think about all the wonderful things that mother had done for me. This artifact connects to how hard my mother work to make sure that we had the best and made sure that we had clothes, food, and shoes each and every day. Each and every time I hear this song, I thank the Lord for a great mom and that she is still here with me today. My mother is a gift from God that I will cherish for the rest of my life. However, this song makes me think of my grandmother. I remember every Sunday going to church, she will turn on the radio and this song played. My grandmother is a mother of mothers. She took the place of all dads, moms, aunts, and uncles. She was like one of God’s precious miracles that was sent to me and my family. I still cry today when I hear this song because I know how much I miss my grandma, but I know that as long as I have memories, she is always here.

Provide some additional research on this artifact.

For example, if it is a song, do you have information about the songwriter? If it is a painting, do you know any more about the artist? Describe any additional information that you have about the creator of the artifact. If the creator, or artist, is unknown, please provide your best guess as to who created the artifact.

Shirley Caesar was born on October 13, 1938, in Durham, North Carolina. She was inspired by her father, Big Jim Caesar. She went to college in 1957 majoring in business education at North Carolina State College. This is when she got her call as a ministry. Her first sermon was in Chicago. She has become one the most visible gospel singer in the world. However she had plans of completing her education and becoming minister. In 1984, she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Shaw University. In 1990, she was ordained as a pastor by her husband, Bishop Harold Ivory Williams, which is the head of the Raleigh-based Mount Calvary Holy Church of America (http://www.cbn.com/cbnmusic/artists/caesar_shirley.aspx, n.d.). Today, she is still inspiring her gospel music all around the world.

Consider these questions: How has technology changed human art making? How has technology changed human art sharing? How do you, or could you, use technology in making your own art?

Insert your answer below:

Today, art has changes through how humans express emotion. When we look at art, we often use some type of expression that deals with our emotions. These are emotions in which we can actually express our thoughts on the art and what actually the art is saying. However, thinking more on art and humans, some may believe that art teaches us more about beauty or maybe even the worse side of the art. For example; some humans may look at different or may not actually understand the art as the way some may. In my opinion, I believe that art helps brings about understanding and even help us to see the beauty of the new creation in the world. Art today is found in many things. This can be through an object, human, and even through all the beauty creations that God has made. Art in others words is all about life. What we see is so amazing and beautiful in the human eye.
