Final Project Assignment – Teamwork, Report & Oral Presentation

Worth: 20% of final marks

This is a GROUP Assignment consists of THREE Parts: PART A - Project Proposal, PART B - Written Report & PART C – Presentation. All are to be group efforts – no individual submissions will be accepted.

GUIDELINES:

PART A: Project Proposal: DUE: Thursday March 19. Worth = 2.5%

· Group formation: 4 students

· Review the assignment handout carefully.

· You may choose and register your choice with your instructor. This will be on a first come, first choice basis.

· You will have to select three companies in which you are interested from the following sources:

i). Canada’s 50 Best Employers – Maclean’s Magazine

ii). Canada’s Best Managed Companies – Financial Post

(Banks, Insurance Companies or Accounting firms, will NOT be accepted)

· Each group will have one company approved for their assignment

· Submit a printed copy of your proposal with group consensus for approval in class on Thursday March 19 @ 2:30 PM: which will be finalized in the class on same day.

After approval of the project, groups must conduct intensive as well as extensive research on the Company of choice , and a report to be presented in a word document format according to following order:

PART B – Report: DUE: Tuesday March 31. Worth 12.5%

TOPICS those are included in the report outlined below:

Section 1. Introduction:

It should include an introduction to the company and a short and concise overview of your findings. Three to four short (three sentences each) paragraphs should be adequate. Remember the purpose of introduction is as an executive summary of the whole report.

Section 2. Management, Leadership, and the Internal Organization:

a. Role of vision and ethical standards in the subject company

b. Leadership – its importance – what type leadership is indicated for the subject company

c. Meaning and importance of the corporate culture

d. How is span of control important for the subject company

Section 3. Human Resources Management:

a. Significance of hiring the ‘right’ people – what type of recruitment do they use to get the ‘right’ people

b. How do orientation, training, and performance appraisals aid in retention of best employees

c. Look into employee benefits and incentives – what are they and are they effective

d. Motivation – how do they motivate employees

Section 4. Empowerment, Teamwork, and Communication:

a. Do employees feel empowered, if so, how

b. How are teams used effectively within the company

c. Effective communication – why is it essential to success and explain how it works for this company

d. How does the subject company engage with the community in terms of managing external relationships – has there ever been a crisis with which they have had to deal

Section 5. Production and Operations Management:

a. Describe their production process

b. Describe their location – what criteria did they use in selecting this location

c. What are the production/operations management tasks

Section 6. Consumer-Driven Marketing:

a. Identify the product or service’s ‘utility’

b. Identify, fully, the target market

c. If business is international in scope, do they use a standardized or an adaptive approach to the market – explain fully

d. Fully explain their approach to market segmentation

Section 7. Managing Information through Use of Technology:

a. What is the role of information in this business

b. Outline how, and what types, of hardware and software they might utilize

c. Would there be any specific security or ethical issues for this business and their use of technology

Section 8. Accounting and Financial Issues:

a. What type of accountant would work on the financial statements and why

b. What financial statements would be critical and why

c. Explain how the subject company would approach creating their budgets

Section 9. Financial Management:

a. Does (or would) this company have a CFO – why or why not

b. What kinds of issues does this company need to address in its financial plan

c. Discuss what kind of short term assets this business probably manages

d. If this business required short-term or long-tern funding, what would their options be

e. Briefly discuss the types of risks this business faces

Section 10. Summary:

Create this summary after all of the work has been completed and formulated into the document, which will be submitted for evaluation.

Section 11. References: In addition to your textbook, at least five other sources must be referenced. These should include the website of the company under study and several periodical journal entries.

ESSENTIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPORT:

Your report will be comprised of an in depth (as far as possible) analysis of the subject company. Group MUST leave plenty of time to build a coordinated, cohesive document.

· Length: Report should be of minimum 12-15 pages, excluding cover page, table of contents, references, and appendices.

· Format: MUST use 12-font size written word document; & MUST 1.5 space

· Style: Pages properly electronically numbered, mentioning parts, sections with proper headings and sub-headings to segregate and logically organize your work.

· Cover Page: Includes assignment title, Company Name, members names (first & last) & IDs, course #, my name & date.

· References: MUST cite bibliographic references in APA format minimum FIVE, plus your textbook and other relevant periodical etc.

· Appendices: A printed copy of charts, data, diagram, and any relevant documents to support evidence of research.

· Submit a word processed typed printed copy of this report to your professor in class on Tuesday March 31 . @ 2:30 noon

PART C: - Group Presentation – DUE: April 07 & 09. Worth = 5%

PRESENTATION: Oral presentation to the class in-group.

Groups # 1 - 4 on Tuesday, April 7 and Groups # 5 - 8 on Thursday, April 09

TIME: prepare an informative and persuasive 12 -15 minute oral presentation

An excellent use of that time would be to rehearse the presentation together.

TOOLS: Use Power point slides, video, handout, chart etc. for making your presentation. 7- 8 PP slides are recommended.

DRESS CODE: Dress for business – you are representing the subject company

STEPS: MUST be followed THREE steps in making a complete presentation as below: Step 1: Introduction, Step 2: Body of the presentation, & Step 3: Summary.

INVOLVEMENT: Everyone MUST actively participate in making presentation.

EVALUATION & GRADING: Be sure to view this document so that you fully understand how your work will be graded. At the same time, Peer Evaluations format will be handed out. You will be evaluated on the quality and clarity of your report and presentation.

Everyone MUST be actively and equally involved in doing all activates related to the project, otherwise marks will vary from one another.
