GCE Assignment 3: Diversity Management

Due Date: Week 10

Group Report / Presentation

60 Marks (15% of final course grade)

Instructions:

1. This assignment requires you to prepare a written team report and deliver a team PowerPoint presentation of your key insights in class (content details required are noted below).

2. Prepare a word-processed file of no more than 7-8 pages double spaced, with a font size of no more than 14 and no less than 12.

3. Please include a cover page, and note your name and student ID # (this page will be included as part of your overall page count).

4. Please submit a printed paper copy of your assignment to your professor at the beginning of class on Week 10. Late papers will be penalized ___ per day (including weekends) unless extenuating circumstances prevail as per the School of Business Assignment Policy.

5. Be prepared to deliver a team 5 minute Powerpoint presentation on Weeks 10 & 11. Teams will be selected randomly on day of presentation – so be on time, and come with a softcopy of your presentation ready to load onto the podium in class.

6. The paper must be authored by the HRMT 301 students to be graded.

7. To assist you in preparing your paper please review Chapter 2 in your text, as well as the supporting chapter’s Powerpoint slides. I also encourage you to visit the Ontario Human Rights web site at http://www.ohrc.on.ca and/or The Ontario Ministry of Labour web site at: http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/ for assistance too.

8. You must conduct secondary research and cite a minimum of 3 different sources utilizing standard APA or MLA format for all aspects of your report (title page, page numbering, in text citations, references, etc.). All sources of information must be credited, whether a direct quote or not. Purpose of Assignment:

To examine beliefs, values and behaviours that form individual and community identities and the basis for respectful relationships in the workplace.

Introduction:

Diversity Management is broader/more inclusive than employment equity. The current labour market includes four generations in the workplace and an increased reliance on migrant workers, diversity in the workplace is greater than ever. Not only are the work teams more diverse, but with a global market, so are businesses clients. Diversity, generally means differences, any difference that you can conceive: height, weight, eye color, right handed vs. left handed, gender, physical ability, age, ethnicity, and on a deeper level: parental status, sexual orientation, beliefs, values, work style, etc.*

Situation/Tasks:

Indie Software is a company that has employees who are of different age groups (traditionalists, baby boomers, Gen X and Y) and ethnicity. Recent new hires have added to the diversity of the company, some of them have different sexual orientations and parental status compared to the employees already working within the company. The first few days has seen some awkwardness among the employees and management feels that having all employees attend a presentation and interact in an activity that will help create harmony among them. As part of the HR team, you have been asked to prepare a presentation and an activity designed to:

· integrate all employees in a multicultural workforce

· use diversity to enhance the organization’s effectiveness

Working in groups of three to five people, perform the following:

A Team Report: (40 marks) (10%)

Conduct research on existing/new ‘Diversity Management’ programs or initiatives in order that your team has a good understanding of how best to prepare your report/presentation.

1. Each team is to prepare a 7-8 page report based on their findings. Your report should include:

2. Cover page (1 mark) and an Introduction (1 mark)

3. Provide some background information on diversity management (6 marks)

4. Identify 3 specific best practices (programs/initiatives) that are currently being used in business today (12 marks)

5. Draw a conclusion by outlining and describing a specific activity that can be utilized in a workplace to promote the acceptance of people who are different. (12 marks)

6. Use the following questions as a guideline to design the activity and presentation

- Consider the perspective of the existing employees at Indie – how would they feel? - Consider the perspective of the new hires to Indie - how would they feel? - Consider your own perspective - are there positions, orientations, values or traditions that you hold that may influence your own approach to this task? - Consider the ways in which one can re-examine him/herself to become integrative in a diverse workplace? - Consider – how has completing this assignment changed you?

· Report style/format (8 marks)

· Identify three unique references using standard APA

· your report should be free of spelling/grammatical errors;

· In a form acceptable for business and professional purposes.

Team Powerpoint Presentation (20 marks) (5%)

1) Prepare and deliver a 5 minute Powerpoint presentation (no more than 4 slides) in class which highlights your team’s key insights and learning's from the analysis conducted in your diversity management report. The purpose is to help others examine beliefs, values and behaviours while promoting the acceptance of people who are different."

2) Your presentation will be evaluated on:

· Clarity, conciseness, knowledge, effectiveness and enthusiasm of the delivery of your content (10 marks)

· content knowledge

· continuous audience eye contact was made,

· delivery of content was done with minimal references to notes/slides,

· presenters could answer audience’s questions (if asked)

· enthusiasm/energy from all team members

· Presenters made effective use of visual aids and timeframe; (10 marks)

· the Powerpoint presentation utilized no less than a 24 font,

· the Powerpoint presentation made excellent use of white space and graphics and background

· sequencing of information was logical and easy to follow

· spelling/error free

· delivered within 5 minute timeframe
