The Love Of My Life
CrossFit. What is CrossFit? “CrossFit is a methodology. So, it's uhm ... It's a way of programming. It's a way of training. Some people might call it a lifestyle. But it's a method.” (VDH). The official definition of CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity. The meaning of CrossFit is that we as a human being have been created to move our bodies, with constantly varied movements which CrossFitters do are never the same, each movements has it own goal, gymnastic movements involve agility, coordination, balance, flexibility and control. Weightlifting/powerlifting develops several group of mussels at the sometime by lifting them, that leads to having better physical strength and power. Aerobics contain strength training and stretches that will improve the cardiovascular system. All those movements have specific goal. With CrossFit they have added all those random functional movements together in a way that train the whole body at once and doing them with high intensity. “Intensity just means working uh, close to your ... red line or you com-, uncomfortable level” (VDH). CrossFit training is the methodology that helped me get a better life by training and having a healthy life style
In CrossFit training I intend have the general physical fitness by doing what I thought I was never able to do, the CF Sports increase the work and mental capacity in any field. The main three major domains are weightlifting, gymnastics and functional movements at high intensity.
First of all, weightlifting is about lifting weights around using a barbell. The two group movements for this domain are Clean & Jerk, snatch and thruster. Front, back and overhead squat. Those movements will mostly develops the whole body at once because every muscle is being used at the same time such as thighs, calves and shoulders.
Second, gymnastics primarily using a pair of rings and bars. This domain relies on bodyweight and upper body strength. The movements are front and back levers, hollow variations, push-ups and toes to bar. Those movements will enormously develop the shoulders, back, triceps and biceps, and forearms.
Last, functional movements are the basic movement that we do everyday in our ordinary life. “You can do 'em since the day you were born. If you look at a baby, they can squat. Right? I didn't teach them how to squat. They've done that pretty well. But we teach adults to remember how to squat now that they're adults. So functional movements, we've been doing it all of our lives” (VDH). Functional movements like running, jumping, squatting and lunges. What CrossFit did, is that they have added high intensity to get the maximum workout of it.
Healthy life was and still associated with the supermodels and how perfect their body looks, athletes and how powerful they are, or even rich people and how much money they have. “We're a society of uh, immediate gratification. Right? We're looking for that magic pill, that video that we can buy off the TV, you know, get us the quickest results” (VDH). What I have discovered with CrossFit is that most of the assumptions people make about healthy lifestyle are not necessarily true. Few of those assumptions are totally correct like eating healthy food, exercising, staying active. Healthy life style extends a lot further and deeper than what all people know about health. Healthy life has two main crucial aspects.
Physical health, which requires eating good clean nutrition, useful exercise, and the most importantly resting; Robert once told me that eating is necessary, but eating with intelligence is a state of art. Mental health and wellness, which is mostly about having positive thought and self-image; self-support is an essential to being healthy. Sharing love and compassion, giving and receiving, laughing and experiencing happiness through building relationships with others.
I have found that all those indispensable elements of happiness and healthy life style in one single place called CrossFit Box. Those aspects help me a lot not only in my life, my relationship with other, changed my attitude better than before but also helped me changing my physical appearance. I weighted around 250 pounds. with 30 percent body fat before joining CrossFit; with the huge amount of encouragements, advices, and guidance I received from my new family I was capable of being happier than I ever been before and that help me push myself out of my comfort zone. Robert VDH, my brother my coach, helped my throughout his knowledge and experience with weightlifting, gymnastics and endurance movements. I finally managed to get to my goal in 8-month period. I lost 70 pounds and dropped my body fat percentage to 18. Not to mention the amount of changes to all the group muscle in my body.
