Questions
1 Why does Suzanne confess to witchcraft in the first place?
Suzanne confesses to witchcraft in the first place to avoid imprisonment. She was made to believe that by confessing to witchcraft, the court would let her go. The peasants that took her and another prisoner to prison persuaded them to confess to practicing witchcraft and the court will let them go by virtue of the confessions not being so spontaneous. Additionally, she is pressed to say that she practices witchcraft.
2- How and why is she tortured?
Suzanne is tortured because she tries to retract her earlier confessions. Additionally, there is an issue with bewitched relatives and she had fled to avoid prosecution for practicing witchcraft. Earlier she had confessed of being a witch, had carnal copulation with the devil, and had been involved in activities of witchcraft. Later she maintained that she was not a witch, had nothing to do with the devil, and even called the name of Virgin Mary, God, and Jesus severally although she did not deny having made the confessions earlier. She said that she had made the confessions as she was pushed to it. So that she could maintain her earlier confessions, she was tortured. To torture her, she was placed on the torture-rack and a little stretched, but she did not maintain earlier confessions. She was then stretched on the torture-rack more tightly while being urged to maintain the earlier confessions of which she agreed. She maintains the confessions on the questions asked. However, after she is brought down the torture rack and she is interrogated, she says that she is not a witch.
