***Check the course schedule or D2L Dropbox for summary due dates!!
Objectives: Since writing is communication, it is important to develop the skills necessary for understanding the writing of others through active reading and critical thinking. Writing summaries of other authors’ works will help you grow as a writer in several ways. You will learn to separate content from form, focus on main ideas, interpret the words of others by using your own, and identify bias.
Instructions: You will write two objective summaries, one for Essay 2: Responding to an Opinion, and another for Essay 3: Responding to an Academic Article. For each summary, follow the steps below for full credit:
1. Choose an article you want to summarize. For Essay 2, you have a list of opinion essays to choose from in D2L under the Content tab. For Essay 3, you will locate an academic article from a James E. Walker Library database in your major/career field.
2. Using the Active Reading skills discussed in class, read your chosen article carefully and pick out the main points.
Format and Length: All summaries should be typed in MLA format and should include a Work Cited page with the citation information for the original article. These citations can be found on D2L under Content (easy-peasy!). If you choose to quote directly from the article, use quotation marks and include original page numbers. This will serve as practice for citing in MLA. Your summaries should be one to two full paragraphs, or 250-600 words.
Grading: Summaries are worth 5 points each for a total of 10% of your final grade. Your grade will be determined based on the holistic rubric below:
5 points: Summarizes the article accurately, focusing on main ideas, using clear language with few or no major grammar or mechanical errors. A few illustrating details are quotes are used to highlight more important points. MLA format is observed.
