Leadership Analysis

Dr. Steve Williams

This project had the objective of analyzing two dimensions of the leader nature; traits and behavior. Trait is a specific component of the leaders’ personality. Behavior is the way a leader acts or behaves, how they handle people and tasks, and how they allocate rewards and punishments. We interviewed Jay Wang, the human resource manager of 99 Ranch Market located at 7330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. We used different measures to evaluate him level of leadership.

We studied the major leadership traits: personality traits, cognitive ability (IQ), determination, Integrity, self-confidence and emotional intelligence (EQ).  We used the big five model of personality traits to assess the leadership of Jay  and we found out that he is a leader of high conscientiousness. A conscientiousness is a tendency to be thorough, organized, controlled, dependable, and decisive. He is methodical about his work which contains  arranging  training lessons, making detailed palns for their recruitment and assigning job duties to his subordinates.

Then we studied how intelligence influenced Jay’s daily work. Intelligence or intellectual ability is positively related to leadership. It has more to do with the mechanics of how we learn, remember, problem-solve and pay attention rathim than with any actual knowledge. Working at 99 Ranch, Jay has discovered that his verbal ability has improved immensely so that he is able to communicate with coworkers more effectively and help them contribute more to their work to achieve the goal of orgnization.

Determination is the desire to get the job done and includes characteristics such as initiative, persistence, dominance, and drive. Jay is a leader with strong determination and when he is facing difficulties,he holds the ability to persevere despite obstacles and setbacks . His coworkers admire his qualities and show great respect for him.

The integrity is basically the quality of honesty and trustworthiness. We used questionnaires to investigate the personal trait of Jay about his integrity. According to the reaserch, Jay is defined as a leader who own the quality of intergrity because he take responsibility for everything he did to the company, the subordinates show respect to his decisions because he is a reliable and trusty leader. To evaluate him honesty we asked him directly about how to handle a situation where he finds that one of his woker was stealing the goods from the store. He suggets that the company comes first and by being a manager it’s him duty to solve these problems. in this case stealing is not acceptable, so the employee would be fired, but he mentions that employees would be given a second chance if they made small mistakes like being late.

Self-confidence is another trait that helps one to be a leader. Self-confidence is the ability to be certain about one’s competencies and skills. Unfortunately,Jay lacks some self-confidence and most of his work is to follow the old rules of the last HR manager. He did not reform human resource management system, and he prefers to making small changes step by setp instead of making giant changes at a time because he is afraid of causing unsatisfaction among workers.

A final trait that is important for leaders is sociability. Sociability is a leader’s inclination to seek out pleasant social relationships. For example, since 99 Ranch is a Chinese market, most emplpyees are Chinese immigrants,so they prefer to talking in Chinese which makes other workers feel ignored.Jay is sensitive to worker’s needs and in order to solve this problem,he set rules requiring them to talk in English in their working hour so that they can talk more to each other and improves their relationship.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage one’s own feelings and emotions and the feelings and emotions of othims. Jay mentioned that in the work environment fairness is always an argument about the procedure on how to select a new employee. To solve this problem,he discusses the requirements of the new employees with other managers before recruitment.

We concluded that Jay’s leadership style is employee oriented.Employee orientation is the behavior of leaders who approach subordinates with a strong human relations emphasis. They take an interest in workers as human beings, value their individuality, and give special attention to their personal needs (Bowers & Seashore, 1966). Jay shows concern for his employees, for instance,to satisfy his employees’ needs,he is used to talking to them before deciding the contents of training classes. When he designs interview for new employees,he asks what they can commit to company and how they deal with relationship between coworkers.During final interview,he tends to ask what would they do if meeting difficuties in their work.Concern for people refers to how a leader attends to the people in the organization who are trying to achieve its goals. Jay wants to excavate staff potential and promote the personal worth of employees so that employees can make more profits for the company. He hopes that every worker could find their right position in company and maintain good relationship to create a comfortable friendly organization atmosphere and temperature.

We learned and studied many concepts from this exercise. In class we constantly relate traits and behaviors to ones’ leadership style and capability. However, doing this exercise gave all of us an even greater insight. We first hand had to be the ones trying to figure out Jay’s leadership traits. We learned how to assemble a line of questioning that would give us feedback on a persons’ leadership style. Of course, the questions and answers that correlate to a certain leadership style is based on the books information. However, we ourselves delegated which questions we felt were most important. Reason being, we cannot ask all the questions in the book for the time allotted in an interview to get to know the manager. Overall, Jay proves to be a great leader. A great leader comes in many forms with different traits and behaviors. Jay exhibited great quality skills to manage a team including but not limited to honesty, integrity, and self-confidence. Besides, his strong sociabiliry helps create cooperative relationships.A combination of those traits makes him a great leader because him subordinates believe they can trust him and each other.

If thime was something he could improve on it would be to

In conclusion, this assignment was very analytical and thought provoking. We had to analyze and think of a selection of questions to be able to learn someone’s’ leadership style. We learned a lot because of the in-depth analysis about the concepts we applied.
